Looking for a custom folder

You could also check out Crusader Forge. They make some incredibly overbuilt folders. Not sure what the wait time is, but I know they've gotten pricey.

Yuna is another good one, especially any of his models in the "Type S" configuration.

A 1/4" blade on a folder is pretty dumb imo, and indicates a lack in advanced understanding of folding knife design and how the knives are best utilized....3/16" is overkill, but it will be your knife

I'm looking for a custom folder I'd like based on some specific specs. So far, my search has been fruitless. I turn to you, my fellow blade nuts!
My specs are:

*4 to 4.5 inch blade
*frame or linerlock
*3/16 or 1/4 inch thick blade
*G10, micarta, or carbon fiber scale options
*price range around $500 (maybe more, it depends)
*The option for a duracoat blade (not nessecary, but preferred)

Weight isn't really an issue for me, I don't mind carrying a monster in my pocket (as I'm sure you can tell by the specs). I'd also like to find one with a flipper. So, anyone have a suggestion?

The Crusader Forge FIFP looks like a freakin' beast! Yuna has nice blades, but I don't want to wait that long... I'm also considering the WDZ Azrael. Choices, choices, choices.

If you can find out the wait and don't mind spending a little over your budget of $500, then the FIFP would definitely be a sick knife to get. I haven't seen many around, so it has that exclusivity factor as well. The G-10 scaled version is closer to your price range, but I'd be too tempted to spend the extra $200 on the all titanium version, as I'm currently on an "all-metal-everything" kick :D

Considering your defined specifications, I'd say your two best choices would be the FIFP and the Hoback A15. Jake is a very accommodating maker as well, so he can tailor your knife to be closer to your desired specs if you ask him.

@Kohai
1/4" is only 1/16" thicker than 3/16", so I see no problem with it. Some people may think 3/16"+ is overkill for a folder, but like you said, it will be my knife. If I happen to see something that has a 1/4" in thick blade (which is pretty rare), I don't want to rule it out.

IF you get a blade that long and thick in a flipper you may find that you have trouble holding onto it....not unlike automatics that have very strong springs. The size of the stop pins and the thickness of the frame material may also need to be massive. Good luck.

I don't know any knife makers who specialize in over-built knives that don't have at least a 6 month wait. Sniper Bladeworks won't be taking orders until after the first of next year, Kingdom Armory just closed their books, Hoback has around 6 months wait and is no longer doing pure customs, Direware I think is at about a year right now as is Yuna and WR Bladeworks, Sean Kendrick is at about 3 years, Andrew Fitz is at about 2 years and the list goes on and on.

If you want one relatively quick, I would go with Hoback. He is definitely one of my favorite knife makers and his wait is probably the shortest. You could also check out JBS Tools or Alan Davis right here on the site. Their wait times are less and Alan Davis will make anything you can dream up and although he doesn't use super-thick, overbuilt titanium he will make you a brilliant cutting tool. JBS is new to folders but what he's come up with so far is definitely impressive.

I'm not sure when Dalibor will start his next run but the Regulus is the very definition of overbuilt and bad ass!!!

Good luck!

Now that looks awesome, nice score. And double action to boot, wow!

Here's a huge monster but you will have to wait. 5.25" length blade with a .25" thickness and reasonably priced. William Woods TiTAN

William Zermeno Azrael XL

He has lots of different options. The one on the bottom is the one he made for me. You can get the XL for under 400...

This is mine. The options on this one add a little to the price, but it's BEAUTIFUL

The Medford knife and tool Praetorian model is the most robust folder I've ever seen, and I believe the blade is over 1/4 inch thick.
