Hello, I'm looking to get a roughly 20 inch long (including handle) machete/ survival knife made out of the new Magnacut steel, I've come up with a design I'm super eager to try out and trying to find a maker that could whip it for me before july this year. If interested please tell me a little bit about the work you've done in the past and send me your email so I can send you my design.

Thanks.

Before July? Shoot if you'd said AEB-L I'd have been all over it. Good luck!

It can be as late as july 14th if that helps at all but I'd prefer a little before if at all possible. But thanks for your interest anyways, please forward my request to any makers you might know that are good.

edit: one other thing I'd like to mention is that I would be fine with just the blade being complete, including the finish which I'd like to be a stonewash finish that looks very close or nearly identical to a bead blasted finish in its almost mat like appearance. I can do the handle my self if need be.

I'd be game for it. I can begin in about a week. I mostly make kitchen knives, but have done a couple of bowies and daggers, a friend of mine has commissioned a large 20" bladed, hand and a half bowie style chopper that'll be starting on today.

Great! thanks so much for your interest, I do have one change I made to my original design from when I first posed this thread and that's that I went from an oakwood handle to a G10 handle with a grip a little bulkier in the middle rather than simply strait across, with some rubber rings epoxied across it for added grip strength (think certain Ka-Bar knives to get a general idea), I however don't think I can make this type of handle so if you're still down let me know.

Also do you do your own heat treat or outsource it? If you outsource please let me know who's your go too.

Thanks

Send me a picture of the design and the finer details via PM or email so I can get a better idea of it, sort of "in the flesh" and we can hash out the finer elements of it there too. I'm game to try just about anything, at least once anyways.

Ok I sent you my design, look for an address that's from protonmail, we can hash out the finer points in PM, so if you have any questions PM on here after you see the design.

Thanks again.

Decided to revive this thread, as I'm still searching for someone to make this Machete, already have the steel, just need a maker!

post or DM me your email if interested.

Are you set on using this steel for such a large blade?

In my opinion, you should get (2) super awesome mid/large sized blades out of that magnacut, and choose a better steel suited for such a large blade, like 3V.

I'm set on it, I want my machete to be stainless and I've seen enough people make machetes out of cruwear and 4v which is at the same toughness scale as magnacut without issue. even had someone tell me that magnacut at .157 inches is strong enough for this project and my sheet is .185 inches thick.

Unless you live in Atlantis (in salt water), AEB-L would be better.
AEB-L is still stainless, and Tougher!!!

But I get it...... We want what we want. Sometimes.

I didn't know about AEBL, can it get to over HRC 60? edge retention is a factor too.

Anyways it's kind of to late now, I don't think I can return the steel as it's been to long and I don't want to pay another restocking fee, already went through that once.

Heck Yeah, it can get Really Hard!
Id probably want 60-62 for a big one.

63-64 HRC for a hunting/skinner.

Not too late...... Make two really awesome medium ones in Magna.
Sell one, and it pays for the rest

AEB-L is Cheap. And better for what you want.
If it's worth doing, it's worth doing Right.

Looking into the chemistry and it doesn't even make sense, this AEBL is touted as having toughness on par with L6 but it has the same amount of carbon, no nickel and 13% chromium. How on earth can it have that much toughness with that much chrome without lowing the carbon below L6, very strange......

Anyways I might consider this for a larger machete I'll do in the future, the one I'm doing now only has a 15 inch blade so it's kind of small as far as machetes go and it's more of a special design totally functional if and when I want to use it but it's not meant to be a total go to workhorse all the time that I'll bang up and rough up, tear down the handle and all that, I don't really want to ruin the aesthetics of this piece if you know what I mean, minor scratch's to the blade are fine and acceptable of course but I'm just not looking to beat this thing into the ground.

It's interesting you mention making another blade from my steel sheet though, I actually have enough Magnacut to make a 10 to 11 inch long fighter knife roughly 6 inch long blade or so, I might actually commission to have that made to from this sheet, no sense in letting it go to waste.

Guys I just wanted to say if any you would be willing to just make a roughly ground out blade for this project I could then send it off to heat treat at Paul Bos and find someone else to do the final sharpening and polishing of the blade.

I think I might even make the handle my self or at least try too.

Is there anyone that would be up for that here?
