It may be a junk knife by the definition of some people, but it will most likely be the next knife I buy.

I hope you do buy it.

I want one, but I've been unable to find one (in person) and hesitant to buy one online. As you mention, it's pretty thick, and I normally carry a pocketknife in my pocket, and I'm looking to replace it. The thickness has me worried.

My current one has a phillips head, and the amount of times I've used it, I cannot consider a replacement that doesn't have one.

Knifelover, the knife your describing from "Lost" is probably Buck's 110 or the Schrade equivalent. A great starter knife but many here think there are better available for only a couple of bucks more. I'd recommend the Wally World Spyderco Native for $40. It's an excellent knife and can take all the abuse you can throw at it. Good luck! :D

Depending on where you live. Big 5 in Calif. has CRKT Kasper folders on sale for $29.00(AUS-8), Some Walmarts have Spyderco Natives of S30V for $39.00and the Kabar Doziers in AUS-8 can be had online for as little as $18.00. Falknivens U1 (I think) is a great little folder of laminated steel at 62 RC for around $41.00. Good luck.

Here's some

EKA make great folders not cripplingly expensive. The Fallkniven folders are what you'd expect of them. Lots of people recommend the opinel no. 8 - I find it a bit bulky, but wonderfully sharpenable. Have you thought of something like the Joseph Rogers Marlin. A sheepsfoot/lambsfoot blade, a tin opener and a marlin. Until you have had one at hand you'll never know how useful a marlin can be - not just for rope twiddling.

I don't know how many of you are "LOST" fans but the last episode there was a really nice foldable knife with a glossy wood finish on the handle. I'd like to see if I could find a knife similar if not identical to that.
Knifelover1223 quote:
The wood handled knife I am referring to has a wood grain that is light and dark, a rectangle handle with rounded edges (non-circular) and the wood finish is artificial and glossy. The blade is silver and it points up towards the end.

Knifelover1223,
Maybe you're looking for something like THIS:

I love mine!
And I think it's one of the best bargains you can find.

Good luck,
Allen.

I was down at Smokey Mountain Knifeworks the other day and was looking at getting a Kabar Mule to beat on in the garage and around the house instead of my CRKT M16. Anyway they had the S&W knives buy 1 get one free and half off. I ended up with 2 S&W folders for about $15 out the door. I use the hell out of them now. I wouldnt pay $40 for them but for what I paid I am very happy. They hold a decent edge and are fairly sturdy. Victorinox is a great knife company for value as well. I have carried a classic on my keychain for years and used it to death. It will take an amazing edge. Doesnt hold it too long but still very convenient and tough.

I've found out over the years that bargains can be found on their website too. But you have to check carefully because the sale items don't always end up in the "clearance" section. I check each of my favorite brands and sort by "lowest to highest price"

There has been a lot of good advice given here. I personally would stay away from the S&W knives. I have seen some of the darrell Ralph designed HRT series that are okay. But, if I were going to get a good knife for not a lot of money I would get the Endura 4 from Spyderco:
