I have a 1x42 and I would like to stock up on belts for it. The only place I know to go to get them is through knife supply websites (very limited selection) or ebay (dont trust the quality and I don't think there aren't that many choices). I am looking for grits from 20 to polishing levels and everything inbetween.

Does anyone have a few suggestions on websites that would be a good one stop shop for good quality belts of this size? I know these sizes still exist for mine.
Thanks.

Hmmm. Where can I find belts aboe 600 grit? Besides stocking up on 60-600, for steel and handle material, I am also looking for belts that are higher than 600 for polishing stabilized wood. Where would I find them? I don't see anything above 600 on truegrit and on supergrit the only things higher than 600 are micron belts for metal.

I wouldn't go much above 600 on a machine myself. Unless you can slow it down grits that high tend to heat up fast and burn. As far as using higher than 600 on stabilized wood to polish it, I would recommend hand sanding instead. I don't have variable speed so I go to 220 on the belt, then switch to hand sanding up to my desired grit, then buff.

You can make an easy jig to cut 2x42 belts in half with a razor blade. Twice the 1x belts for price of one.

+1 to Grayzer there on hand sanding above 220. Actually, I usually go to 400, but I have variable speed.
Lee Valley used to sell micron finishing belts for 1x42 but IIRC they really sucked for anything but sharpening.

OOOOhhhh! Good to know. I will be modifying my order to not include my 600's. My grinder is too fast as it is right now anyway. I think its 1750rpm!

That's what I was thinking. I can't remember where I saw it, but one of the knife making suppliers stocks a splitter for 2" into 1". Not sure how well they work, but that would open up a lot of options, and as Hawk said, would be less expensive.
