Looking for a first Khukri

Thanks All,
I was just looking at the M43 on the web site. Looks good, as soon as I get some money! Those rings on the handle look cool and I can appreciate the cultural significance of them, but I really think they would be hard on the hand. M43 looks like what I'm after, it's either that or some new arrows!

The ring on the handle are not there for no reason, and they are not uncomfortable, they add quite a bit of safety to swinging. Personally I don't care for a user kukri without the ring, as I find the need to keep adjusting my grip back up to where it was when I started (keeps slipping down to the butt). It's even a bigger pain when your hands get sweaty.

hey Archer,
I just purchased a M-43 and there are no rings on the handle. The one that I have is a full tang slab handle made from horn.
This blade is the full 18 inches.
The buttcap ( for lack of a better word) seems to do a good job of stopping the hand.
Now I have yet to use this blade for any type of chopping. Still trying to pack up a house and start new job in a couple of weeks so I haven't had a lot of time to take it out and put it through it's paces.

Agreed. If the ring is uncomfortable, the first thing you should do is adjust your grip. Putting the ring between your ring and pinky fingers forces you to choke up on the blade a bit and improves balance. Anything that keeps your sweaty hand in place is good (to a point). The ring is sort of a Nepalese subhilt. I'm assuming that the increased curvature of the M43 allows a more solid grip, but having never handled one, I can't confirm this.

Thanks, thats a good point about the extra grip given by the handle rings, there is nothing more disconserting than using a knife and feeling your hand slipping down the handle! I normaly wear thick gloves while working in the scrub, but I guess that eliminates my comment about the rings being tough on a hand. Gutted, just when I was reaching a verdict, thanks for the info, it's cool to hear from people who have brought the knife you are looking at.
I'll get there eventually,
Cheers, Stephen

My M43 at 17" 28-29oz by Vim, is my current favorite (in my small collection) for a "packable destroyer". This is my personal limit for a practicle and useable big kuk. It is also the one I typically work out with against 8'htx10"dia pine posts as dummy target. I would suggest you get accoustomed to the dynamics of the more substantially curved blade, compared to the standard angle kuks, before you start using it aggressively.
