Looking for a first knife

Does anybody know where i can look for knives online other than knivesshipfree/collecterknives/oldhundredcollectibles

A per BFC rules, we can only mention dealers who are paid subscribers here. But if you go to GEC's website, you can find a list of all the authorized GEC distributers. GEC enforces a minimum price policy with their dealers, so any dealer you look at should have similar prices within a few bucks (and usually free shipping). If a specific knife you're looking at seems excessively high, it's probably because you're looking at a prototype or maybe a dealer exclusive/SFO.

Thanks for the help guys!
I've been leaning towards getting a #68 white owl, or a #33 conductor. I have also been looking at the #66 serpentine jack, but I can only find it in 3 blades.

I tried tsaknives, but their prices are too high for me.

I've decided that I'm going to be getting a chestnut cv peanut already, but I want a GEC knife as well.

I approve of the chestnut cv peanut, I own one myself (see pic above) every shift at work a peanut goes with me.

My first GEC was a white owl. Think carefully about whether you want a bail or not, I didn't and got a Northfield with a bail which bugs me when I use it.

A Tom's Choice single blade might be the answer. Sturdy, slim, carbon steel, beautiful sawcut bone.

good luck finding those barlows.

I just purchased two Charlows, a single blade clip off eBay for $80, and a single blade spear from a friend on this forum for $120, both new and never used. They both showed up the same day, and I bought them about 20 minutes apart. Now that's some good luck!

So they do show up in the secondary market, but it takes patience, perseverance, and luck!

Thanks guys! I think I may just get a serpentine jack, but I'm having a hard time finding one. mostly I can only find moose jacks, or serpentine 2 blades in acrylic

Does anybody know how i can tell when GEC is going to be out with a new run?

I am pretty sure in my earlier post I linked you directly to a #66 Serpentine Jack that is for sale right now from a very reputable dealer. Did you miss my post?

Oh, I only linked the site, sorry. Here's the actual knife for sale.

If I had some money in the knife budget I'd be tempted to get that one myself.

There were 2 runs of #66 Jacks. The first with the pen secondary and another for Charlie's SFO with a punch secondary. Who knows if and when GEC will do another run of #66 Jacks.

Just for your Information, All three of these are Authorized Factory Distributors of Great Eastern Cutlery. All have clearly stated Return Policys. We only sell New in the Tube Knives that carry the full Great Eastern Cutlery Warranty. All are PAID supporting member dealers of BladeForums. Some of us have GEC Knives that are available no where else. And all have Free Shipping. And we all carry other Traditional Knife Brands.
But of course you could find a second or third hand knife, MAYBE at a better price. You could pay for S&H. And hope you can contact the unknown seller if there is a problem.

Good points, Bob.

GEC's website lists what is currently being produced and you can see a list with release dates for most of their knives organized by year. I get interested in a newly produced GEC knife and then can't find it anywhere. I don't know if it is sold out or the dealers simply haven't gotten any to sell. Maybe someone could enlighten me, especially a dealer.

You have pretty much made your choice. My preference is generally to buy a Trapper pattern knife. That's usually the very first knife I buy from a maker that I am not familiar with.

Great Eastern Cutlery makes all their knives in very limited runs. Usually only 25 to 50 of each handle material. That's not a lot to go around. Some knives are made as Special Factory Orders (SFO's) for an individual Distributor and are available only from that Distributor. The best thing to do, if you are interested in a particular knife, is a pre-release order from a Distributor who does that. If not, keep your eyes peeled and if you see what you're lookin for , don't hesitate.
