After looking through all the reviews i still didn't find anything alone the lines of what I need. As described I'm looking for a good fixed blade thats capable of being used for self defense (centered point etc) thats somewhere between 4 and 6 inches long; as well as being no more than 150 dollars.

An example of one of the knives I've been looking at is the SOG daggert, but I'd like to get the educated opinions of people here first before I drop any money on a knife. Any help is greatly appreciated.

S-1 Fallkniven
Rat4

These 2 knives would in your price range and really be tough performers.

Both have good steel and great edge geometry for cutting chores. They would out perform the SOG and come with better sheaths.

Leu Custom Knives!! His SD Dagger is awesum @ around $150. That's $150. for a hand-made knife!!

Fallkniven F1 for around $100, awsome knife. Any Bark River, very nice, many to choose from, very good cutters.

I want to thank you all alot for your help, I know you probably get questions like these commonly. I have to pull another "newbie" question though; where do you feel is a reliable place to buy these blades from? I see that rat cutlery has a link to sites that sell their product, but not anything of the sort on fallkniven. Thanks again.

Necron, are you looking for a self-defense knife, or a knife that can be used for self-defense? Big difference.

If its a self-defense knife you are looking for the RATs, Bark Rivers, and Fallknivens (great, great knives) aren't what you want.

You want a military style fixed blade fighter like a short KaBar, for example. Or a Boker Applegate-Fairbairn or trench knife, or one of the SOGs...

If you want a knife that can, in a pinch, be used for last ditch self-defence, anything will work.

Totally for Self defense/offense EK commando knives. You can usually find these on fleabay for around the c-note mark.

There are at least a dozen Bark Rivers that will fill your need.

A-2 tool steel, convex edge, and IMHO, some of the best knives made.

I'm going to recommend two shorter knives that should be effective -- the Spyderco Perrin Street Beat, and the Boker MPT.

For pure SD, try John Greco's 'Whisper CT', a 5.25" 'fighter' style of his signature 8670 .2" thick steel. His site is 'grecoknives.com'. John is a nice guy, with a great value product. I'm not much for 'pure fighters', as I carry something a bit louder. I do like his work, however - and buy something from him most rimes I see him here at a Birmingham gun & knife show. I like knives as tools - and as my interpretation of art. Nice sheaths, too.

TAk is a great knife. I have one in 1095 and it takes a hell of an edge and is about as tuff as you want to have. Great knife for the woods. Its only about 70 bucks.
