Hey guys I just found your Forum and love it! I am currently looking for a fixed blade hunting knife to be mainly use for skinning game(white-tail deer, squirrels, rabbits, etc). I am looking for something in the 3.5-4 inch blade length that will sharpen easily and hold an edge. I really don't care about cosmetic meaning it won't bother me if it rust, just want a good knife.. I looked at the Esee Knives, just wasn't sure if the were good hunting knives, I am assuming they are.

TIA

It's tough to beat buck knives for these purposes. They were made for it.

If you don't want to spend much try out the buck lite max. I've used one the last couple of years for deer dressing and skinning and it does great. I like the orange handle version because it's easy to find when you lay it down in the leaves. If you want to spend more the vanguard is a great all purpose hunting knife. You may want to look into something smaller for squirrel and rabbit.

Thanks guys, for small game I really like my Boker Trapper, I just love knives and want a good fixed blade to pack on my side, something light and comfortable and that will serve the purpose of skinning larger game and using for outdoor purposes.

Thanks

When I think hunting knives,I think Bob Dozier.

Check his website Mondays around 10 am cst. He list his available knives for sale in his Featured inventory section.

Lots of models and materials to choose from..

If 200-250.00 is too much, then I would look at a Buck Vanguard, Fallkniven F1.

On the cheaper end of things, how about a Green River knife?
Jeff White makes some nice stuff, especially for the price.
Also, check out Condor knife and tool. They have a nice selection around what you're looking for.
Old Hickory is another I'd recommend.

All those above are typically 1075 or 1095 steel, with a dash of 420 and maybe some 01...simply meaning more than most of 'em are gonna rust without regular maintenance. But I've never had a problem keeping those steel types nice and sharp.

Cold Steel Master Hunter or Master Hunter Plus. Its the perfect size and it has very nice edge retention. I hunt deer and am also a falconer and hunt lots of rabbit and squirrel and Master Hunter works great on all.

I also have an old Outdoor Edge Kodi-Hunter w/hook (might be called a skinner) that has been in my falconry vest for about 8 years. It is just about the same dinensions as the Master Hunter. It gets used alot and has rarely been sharpened since I got it. Either would be a great knife.

Thanks guys, as much as I would love to own one of the higher end knives, honostly I just can't afford it. I know you get what you pay for, but I wouldn't mind giving $100.00 for a good knife. I have 3 daughters one who will start college in the Fall, jsut bought her a car, other is 14 and the baby is going to be 6..I have no money(haha)...Seriously jsut on a budget! Thanks for all you help, and I love this website..

Thanks for all your help,

Have a look at Ragweed Forge. He has a wide selection of (mostly) Scandinavian knives. Falkniven, Buck, Russell (Canadian Belt Knife), ESEE, Bark River, Roselli and Marbles (look for the older ones in 52100 produced when Mike Stewart was at Marble's before he left to form Bark River Knives) all offer great hunting knives. Have fun looking.

The ESEE3 would be fine if you want to spend around a hundred bucks. If you want to spend $12 to $25 for super deer/small game skinners, get a Marttinni Condor series knife with the rubber grip or the Marttinni M571. They come sharper out of the box than Moras and hold a great edge. Very easy to resharpen too. I field-dressed and took the hide off my last whitetail with a Marttinni knife. After washing the hardened fat off the blade, it sliced paper like I had not even used it! I was impressed. I used the Little Classic but its big brothers would be better for those with large hands.

@xjzhx I guess I will start saving for one, I really like the look and price of the Marttinni jsut need to find one I like with carbon steel.. I have a cold steel pendleton hunter hardly ever used it, what is the word on this little knife?

Bob Dozier's knives are an extension of your hand when skinning a deer. Very sharp and perfect size. I use a slipjoint to clean squirrels.

Consider the Spyderco Moran. Good knife for your purposes.

I like Bob Dozier's knives and have been buying about one a year for a while. He makes a fine knife. They are custom knives but are made to use and priced to sell for the most part. Of course, everyone has certainl expectations on pricing.

I use my ESEE 3 to clean game with and have no problems. It will not hold and edge nearly as long as a Dozier, but I use my 3 for everything. About 90% of the time when im outside its the only knife I have on me and its a rare day I feel under knifed with just my 3. It is tougher than the Dozier but I use it for a bunch more tasks than as a hunting knife.

I sent you a visitor message. I have a nice knife that's just sitting here collecting dust.

Check out the Buck Vanguard, an excellent knife for skinning etc and well within your budget.
