Looking for a general purpose hunting fixed blade

Dan Eastland at Dogwood custom knives and LT Wright make some thinner profiles within your budget, great stuff.

Ok thanks again for all the recommendations but I really find the beckers to be terribly ugly and I just can't see buying one no matter how practical they may be. I also am not a fan of rubber handles the extra traction is just not worth the cheap look in my mind

No specific brands to suggest but I would think about what kind of grind you want. I would rather have a flat, convex or saber grind than a hollow grind. The flat grinds will cut meat fine but the hollow grinds bind in wood for me.

Also point YouTube towards the virtuovice channel. The guy is a doctor in northern Japan where there is unlimited deer hunting. Great reviews and sharpening. He favors the Bark River knives but also says that he finds the Mora Companion HD to be nearly as good for a fraction of the cost.

Cheap look huh? I guess thats your opinion, but I think its a pretty bad reason to exclude a crapload of REALLY good options. For example, the entire Falkniven line.
Personally, I think the cold steel master hunter is probably the best all around hunting knife under 100 bucks. But darn, it has that ridiculously cheap looking molded kraton handle that will never slip out of your hand! What the hell cold steel? Couldnt you make it less functional? Some people like looks more, ya know?

Ah, the beauty of knowing the right answer to a question that has had multiple addendum's.

Here's your knife. Look no further as you have found perfection

Unless of course you are anything like me, and you desperately want the best without compromise... in which case, you want this

A Kellam Wolverine would probably fit the bill, or maybe one of their Wolf Pack series.

I'll be the first to admit I like my knife to look good and in my opinion black rubber handles just don't look very good I find that a good micarta wood or bone handle looks great and provides adequate grip

I hear you. I'm just saying that he's missing out of some great knives. If I were him, I would get a master hunter and replace the scales with something else he liked. The blade on that thing is just incredibly versatile. But then so is every falkniven that he excludes because of his aversion to material progress

Hi Savage99, I've got a knife that may work for you. I listed it in the Knifemakers' market but didn't have any takers. It's 1080 with cocobolo handle scales, and would work great as an all-purpose hunter and can definitely handle camp chores (that's essentially what I had in mind when I designed it; I'm a hunter and I like to carry only one all-purpose knife with me into the woods). It's got a full convex grind with a satin finish. Here's the listing:

I'll give it to you for free since I couldn't sell it. Hopefully it will get you interested in handmade/custom knives (once you've used one you'll be hooked!) and you can check out some of the other great makers here on the forum. If you're interested PM me w/ a mailing address and I'll ship it out.

Wow just wow Mike I can't even believe that, and this after today when I looked at the bill for school in the fall and decided that I couldn't really afford a new knife for a little while. Ps I am having trouble sending you a PM could you possibly send me one with your email so we could discuss further.

Sorry for the PM troubles, try emailing me at the address in my sig, look forward to hearing from you!

Survive GSO 4.1 in 3V. Perfect timing because they have factory seconds on their website. click knives, potluck, seconds and get the 4.1 lottery. I cant tell they are seconds.

only cost $140, that is a steal for 3V steel

The best knife for you is the Alpine Valley in 1080 & Cocobolo. Satisfaction guaranteed! Your lucky day and a nice gesture from East Branch Knives.

If the handle bothers you kabar sells micarta made for the Becker line, plus TKC makes really nice g10 for them as well

So you want something with an almost spear point blade with little or no Ricasso.

There is the Aurora by Bark River but you will not get it for under $150 unless you just luck out.

There is also the Condor Tool and Knife Bushlore

The ESEE 4 is not in the Kephart pattern in my book so you will have to define your wants a little better.

If you are looking for a good hunting knife I also would get a Buck Vanguard but I would get the Cabela's Alaskan Guide Series Buck Vanguard with rubber handles as the steel on it is a S30V with a titanium aluminum nitride coating. Really nice knife for only $99.

The Buck Vangard or Zipper is one of the best designed, and most comfortable hunting knives ever made IMO. I like the standard ones with the 420HC in satin finish. The Vangard design has for different models. One with wood, One with Rubber like shown above, then the Zipper has the same two options only with a gut hook in addition. I hunt with several knives, like the Buck Max lite series, Bark River Bravo series, various folders, but I have to say the Buck Vangard is among my top three favs. Just my 2 cents along with the 10,000 other opinions that flow like a raging river around this place lol.
