Looking for a good belt grinder

I'm in the process of gathering equipment for a new workshop (smithy 2.0), and currently looking to replace a very old 4" X 36" Delta belt sander/grinder that gave out from age and wear with a new one, preferrably one with a dust collection bag. I've been looking at one where I work at, Lowe's, but I don't have experience with any others except that old Delta (the one I'm looking at is a Porter Cable product). Just wanting some recommendations from people who use belt grinders for the same reasons I do. What brands are going to be worth the price?

I would check out Grizzly tools, they have a number of different kinds, even one some knife makers use...if you are looking for a nice knife grinder look at Wilmont grinders..

I started with that kind of thing and the belt would stop with the slightest pressure on the belt.

No $100 hardware store sander will match a $3,000 2x72.

I go Craftsman 2x42, or build a 2x72 GIB, ERRF, KMG Clone NWG whatever

The Count mentions the EERF grinder... that's a great option if you have a friend with a CNC plasma cutter. It's free autocad files to cut out a complete kits of parts for the frame and platen of a GIB style 2x72. Then all you have to do is source wheels and a motor.

The EERF plans can be found at Wilmont grinders website. You'll need a 1/2" steel plate 1'x4' to cut it out of. That cost about $80 new around here. The GIB costs IIRC $260 or so and consists of basically the EERF grinder all cut out and shipped to you. It can be found for sale at Polarbearforge.com.

Either way, you need a drill press and some hand taps to finish the machine, as well as all the bolts to hold it together.

Ninja, go to Salem's website to see reviews of different grinders. I'm in the process of building a EERF. You ought to look into it. Please email me, I have some info for you. Medicevans@ gmail.com

Salem, I actually don't have a friend with a plasma cutter of any sort, but yes I will still look at the CAD files for the EERF. I still have some time though - I probably won't be clearing space for a new workbench until early to mid June, so if I go with the EERF plans I might be able to begin saving up some more money for a cutter in the meantime. Also, I think I remember visiting your website sometime last autumn, nice craftsmanship.

Medicevans, I will email you sometime soon - look for moonrisesteelcrafts@gmail.com (yeah, I need to get that changed) in your inbox.

You might want to check out Wilmont Grinders. Chris has come up with a new grinder that just might fit the bill. ...Teddy

And I can't say enough good things about the Pheer grinder. An excellent choice for a 2.0 workshop if you don't want to build your own.

Wilmont's Little Buddy Grinder Kit (LB-1000) is what you're looking for. They send you a kit that require assembly. If you want an all inclusive kit with Wheels and Motor, he can include that as well. Check it out LB Grinder

I've been using a 2x72" Coote grinder for ten years, it's seen very heavy useage over the years and still runs great. Back then, I paid $400. for it. I don't know what they cost now, but I imagine it will be less costly than almost anything out there. Great bang for the buck!

You need to check out the coote as well as the pheer grinders they both give you a lot of bang for your buck. I am getting the pheer grinder for myself.
