Looking for a Good Bowie

I'm new here after stumbling onto a thread about the Outback by Down Under Knives. I'm looking for a good quality bowie with a 10" inch blade for a reasonable price. I don't want any junk from Pakistan.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks

Not many production blades like that ... killer quality I should say.

How much are you willing to spend and what are you going to do with it?

I work in the woods clearing and maintaining a walking trail. I need something to whack a limb or dig some roots up. I'm willing to spend $200.00.

Thanks.

Buy 4 KaBar Heavy Bowies. One will work, but if ya' have 200 bucks;). It really is a great knife.

Machete and a file will set you back perhaps $30.

Why do you need more if you are going to be digging-up roots with it? Steel edges and rocks don't like each other.

Check out C, Edmunson. He's a custom maker here on BF. I have a very nice cord wrapped bowie from him that was very reasonable and I know he just sold another on here for around $180. It was an 8 incher I believe so for a 10 incher he'd probably be right in the ballpark.

Sounds like you may need a 'Woodman's Pal'
($50-60) more than a bowie.

Or a BRK&T Golok, they run about $200 new.
Has 11 inch blade, 16.75" oal
Many handle choices. 1080-C steel.
Here's one with green G10 for reference

Cold Steel: TrailMaster, Laredo or Natchez bowies.
Fallkniven: Thor (10"), Odin or A2 (8")

these all fit your parameters and are some pretty high end knives.

Have you seen the ontario spec-plus sp10 marine raider bowie, It's pretty good for the price also theres the crowell/barker browning competition knife.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I guess I need to refine my request.

I already have the following tools: Small ax, hatchet, 3.5” folding knife, saws, chain saws, pruning sheers of various sizes, and a machette.

I recently purchased two inexpensive large knives and each lasted about two weeks. The first was an Elk River with a 7” blade. First the end cap came off and had to be re-glued. Then the tip of the blade broke off. Then the knife broke where the tang joins the blade. The second was a Winchester 10” bowie and I was using it to whack a vine when the blade accidentally struck a rock and immediately I was holding a handle only, as the blade broke where the tang joins the blade. In each of these knives the tang was very small compared to the blade.

I want a quality sturdy knife that will take some abuse but keep on ticking. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, just serviceable.

I looked at the KaBar heavy bowie and I see that it is made in Taiwan, so that makes me a little scared. I think I need a knife with a full tang.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I look the rest of them over.

Have you looked at the Becker BK-9? Should do the work you want done at a reasonable price and won't break on you unless you are throwing it or something silly like that.

Trust me, the KaBar Heavy Bowie will be more than serviceable. Do a search. You'll be hard-pressed to find a negative review of this inexpensive workhorse.

For what you want to do with it, I would definitely check out some of the cheaper (and softer) blades already mentioned. If you really want a decent quality knife to use for this, the Crowell/Barker is a great "bang for the buck" and I don't think I've seen a bad review. A really sweet big knife for an amazingly reasonable price.

My $.02
