Looking for a good bug out blade to leave in my truck

Myself, I live in the frozen North with lax laws, low chance of vehicle break-ins, suburban area and I tend to wander pretty far off the beaten path. on the rare ocassion that I actually PLAN to wander my "bug out knife" is an old Husky chainsaw with an eighteen inch bar paired with a double bitted axe and a Leatherman.

Regarding the true live in things...I got a Single Action .45 Long Colt that travels in my truck quite comfortably with my HI Pen Knife and an SAK Adventurer. (They just go together for me, can't mention one without the other..sorry!)

My wife's favorite is her Becker #10, it's small enough for her to handle and carry, plus, she's used it enough yard grubbing and camping to become quite comfortable with it.

Best of luck to ya', an' let us all know what ya' wind up with!

My first recommendation is to dump the crap and start buying fewer, better blades. If you really needed a knife for survival and only had the one in your BOB, would you want that knife to be a cheap knock-off that you didn't mind leaving in your SUV ?

Please do this one thing! 1 or 2 BETTER blades will go farther than a bunch of crappy ones.

I'm not even going to mention any names as I'm biased in my makers, but you can surely upgrade from what you listed. A knife should be as dependable as your firearm, would you pack a Jennings?

Think about it, and do some reading here.

i would recommmend the UK4eLED, it uses a i watt led bulb and can burn at 10 hours with virtualy no deduction in light output. it also has an all metal body and is made to be used underwater or in hazadous situations so rust or water are not a problem
I too would recommend the UK4AA eLED, it's a very good light, but the body is not metal, it a "Tough, electrically non-conductive, non-corroding ABS and polycarbonate plastic construction... Waterproof to 10 feet".

.... I realized that it is not just paranoia, but a valid concern.... :D

A belated here here to that point as well. The other, under-rated, aspect of having a bag full of kit ready to go is that it allows for some cool spontanous adventures.

I can think of 2-3 times in the past year when I was thinking about getting out for a few days, just wavering on the edge of not being bothered, when having to pack my bag would have tipped me over the edge towards the couch.

Having my bag, fully set with gear and 2-3 days worth of food basics, sitting in the corner, silently saying 'let's go, let's go'...., has led me to some memorable times in the bush.

i'd recommend a fixed blade for a BOB. and a folder in your pocket.....a 5" kabar made by Ka-Bar carbon steel (NOT Camillus or the others) in the truck and a good size multi tool like a leatherman wave or similar. the uk 4aa eled is an excellent choice for a light with 2 more sets of batteries (12 total). dont forget that in cold weather, lithiums are the way to go.

for the folder, look at spydeco, benchmade, buck, or cold steel voyager line (be careful of CS line...somes junk......the voyagers are pretty good).try to get decent steel: s30v...vg10...440c....154cm......aus8 (not up there with the others, but ok)

Dont forget toilet paper......... :D

Big fan of my BRKT bk-7. Sits in my bad just waiting (and occasionally slicing bread).

I too say dump the crap and get good stuff, here's what ya need.

First and foremost a good quality EDC folder that Can both handle light stuff but is tough enough to used HARD. Get a Spyderco Chinook II and that's covered, this knife is the toughest thing out there short of a Strider folder. BM 806 or 710 are also EXCELLENT but are no where near as strong as that Chinook. Chinook can be had for a little over 100dollars. PS you also get a SAK Soldier for under 20 bucks to carry in pocket with the Chinook to provide a few tools AND a user knife that won't "scare the sheeple."

Second you need a GOOD multitool (most will have 2 more pocket knife blades, one plain one serrated, on them). The Leatherman tools are the BEST out there and the new Leatherman Charge is the best of the lot, under 100 dollars (barely).

Third, you need a tough fixed blade. If I could have any, price no object I'd get a Chris Reeve Project I. BUT the Becker BK 7 mentioned already here is probably the next best thing to them for around 50 bucks. Stay away from Ontario and DO NOT buy a Ka-Bar that isn't a KA-BAR (someone has previously mentioned the virtues of the brand name knife). TOPS knives are also supposed to be incredibly good, I like the Moccasin Ranger myself and the Tracker should make a great survival knife. Stick to a Carbon steel knife, you can use the diamond file on the Leatherman Charge or a nearby rock to sharpen them. If you get some superhard stainless you will have a devil of a time sharpening a SS knife without some kind of kit.

Don't know if this has already been mentioned, primarily because I haven't read all the replys yet. I think one of the best deals going right now is the Camillus CQB-3 or Cqb-4, the -3 is larger, that are selling at www.cheaperthandirt.com for $30.00.

oops. that should be www.sportsmanguide.com

I live on the Mason Dixon line, south of Shrewsbury, even though some would call it the boonies, the area rides the line of rural/suburbia for central MD. Within 15 minutes there are small towns in either direction, I-83 is about 5 miles west of me, so I am sure that that highway would be packed. I'm looking at what if something happens to me when I am in my car, at home, I'm all set, fully stocked freezer, stream down the hill, woodstove and grill for cooking, garden, livestock at several farms in the neighborhood. Come spring time, I'm taking day trips, sometimes after work, as far west as Chambersburg PA, or as far east as NJ, familiar areas, but I am not as familiar as I'd like to be. Sometimes, I travel even further. I've got lots of folding knives to choose from, I'm looking at what I can get in the way of a fixed blade knife, not too expensive, something I can leave in my truck that can get beat up. I am contemplating on whether or not buying a used Ontario knife I saw at a farmers market.
Sounds like we're neighbors. How close are you to Norrisville ( Harford County)? Sounds like you live near Rt.439.
I carry a Buck 119 and Ontario Jeff Randall RAK in my truck plus what's on my belt.

i highly recommend buying an anza with a blued blade. you can get it made to your specs for under 80 bucks usually. highly recommened. i love the ones i have.

Whatever you decide to get I would recommend that you make sure you don't keep it in a leather sheath. A KaBar would be a fine choice, as long as you spend the extra couple of bucks for the kydex or nylon sheath. I have seen edge corosion and degredation just from letting it sit in the leather sheath in my house. Not something you would want when you go out and actually need the knife.

Also a multi-tool and SAK are good ideas. They always come in handy and are reasonably light and small. Hopefully you will always be carrying a good quality folder anyway so we can leave that out of the mix. That leaves the hole for a primary BOB knife. I say it needs to be a fixed blade to cover anything to large for the folder, or functions that can't be done with your tools. I think that the ideal would be something that isn't all that expensive, afterall it will just be sitting around most of the time. Also you wouldn't want to risk losing, breaking, or getting an expensive knife stolen. KaBar and Becker make some reasonably priced choices that would work.

I am already starting to think of what I will be putting together for when I buy a trcuk or car when I graduate. Only as I live in the city I am thinking that a large FB would probably never really be needed, but I will still have one. Along with a flashlight, some food a jacket, etc.

Razorback knives, you're not the guy who was at the old cow palace on 851, right above the MD line, are you, I must've been thinking of someone else? He told me he lived off of 439. I live behind Norrisville Elementary School, I'm working on getting a place in West Nottingham, south of Hanover, PA though. Small world indeed!

No that's not me. I live near the Norrisville volunteer firehouse about 10 minutes from the school. If you can make it the Timonium gunshow is this weekend, stop by and say hi.

It's a damn shame that Moores Seafood closed up, I've had a hankering for a shrimp salad sandwich, and some good crabs!

Thank you for your reminder, ErikD. I only have two knives with leather sheaths, and I've just rounded-up my KA-BAR to take it out of it's leather sheath. My KA-BAR is unfortunately exhibiting some corrosion on it's edge, the only part of the blade that isn't parkerized...my other leather sheathed knife is an old Kinfolks, but it's already kept out of it's sheath, practically full time.

Now where did I leave that hatchet in it's leather sheath....

Not sure about how fond you are of keeping the sheath original looking , what I did to mine was to oil the hell out of it , inside and out , many times. The sheath is much darker now (i think it looks better now too) and chock full of oil , my blade doesnt rust at all (I keep it oiled to using Break Free CLP).
I've had it in the sheath for the whole 4 or 5 years I've had the Ka-Bar and not one spot of rust or corrosion. Just a thought.

not a knife but u might want to put a few MREs in ur truck. they have a 9 year shelf life and it is a whole meal

Tell me about it. Ed Stickline said he wasn't making enough to keep it open. When I drank beer, I could walk to get a 6 pack. :D

You may want to even consider the glock field knife. I have one, and have abused it over 6 years now. It holds a good edge and is durable. Plus, its reasonably priced at about $30. ;)
