Hi, I'm new to this forum and knives. I'm looking for a good, strong bushcraft knife or a good knife maker to look at. I can spend up to $200 on the knife + a sheath if it doesn't come with a good one. I have been looking at a Tops BOB on bladehq for $105, and I was going to buy a modular scout sheath from http://www.skystormleatherworks.com/

I want to be the first to recommend a Mora...

Me too, but for $200 you can get 15 Moras. Grab a companion or clipper and enjoy your extra $185. Lots of sheath options.

I think if I were gonna spend $200 for an outdoor knife, I'd get a Fallkniven F1

And maybe look at sheath options:

I haven't found anything to kick the BHK woodsman pro off of my belt. Their O1 just eats through wood effortlessly. You might also want to look at some of the custom offerings on the exchange, $200 will get you a very nice, 1 of a kind knife.

Any of the kabar bk lineup. Best knives for the price. I have a bk10 crewman as well as a bk16 and 17.

Take a look at JK knives. There is a link to his sub forum in my signature.

Also Becker knives, link also in my signature.

Both great options.

Welcome to Bladeforums!

We need to know just what degree of Bushcrafting you'd be considering with the knife first. Are we considering batoning or light duty work?

The Mora definitely deserves mention, and so does the Becker lineup. More than one commenter is going to suggest the BK9, and it's a very fine bowie-type knife, and it costs less than a hundred bucks. Other good options are just about anything from the Ontario and ESEE lines.

My favorite designs:
ESEE 4,6
BK 7,10,16,15,17
Bark river Bushcraft and bravo series
Tops B.O.B.
Condor Bephart, Bushlore, Bushcraft, and a few others
Any Mora really
Ontario Blackbird SK-5
Either of the former BHK companies
Just a few of the top of the head.

Could someone please define what "Bushcrafting" is. For some of us who grew up in nature this term is somewhat weird. It sounds like city folks going into the fringes of a forest to play with their knives for no longer than a trip to the local diner.

I can vouch for Skystorm and the modular dual carry sheath.

and the Tops BOB Fieldcraft.

I would try to get my hands on an AK1 from custom knife maker Alfa knives (has a hosted discussion in the custom knifemaker forum), very similar in size to BOB, Bravo, BK16, Mora, Benchmade. If you want to go custom, my first stop would be to talk to Damon at Alfa Knives. I have one of his AK2's and is without a doubt the finest knife I own.

From their website:

I like the "GNS" from the collaboration between Blind Horse Knives and Self Reliance Illutrated. BHK has since split into two companies. You can still order it from the Self Reliance Illistrated website. I believe one of the new companies, Battle Horse Knives, is making it. I'm saving up for a Kephart made by JK Knives who is a vendor here on the forum.

EnZo trapper is the knife that never leaves my side when I am in the outdoors. Awesome blade profile, good grind selection, good steels, great price, awesome heat treat, etc. Its perfect for bushcrafting and woodworking tasks, you can't go wrong with it.

BK16
Just about any Mora
ESSE 4 or 5
Bark River Bushcraft or Aurora
Survive! GSO 4.1
Go custom -> I have one from Shaerk on the way, in 01, and I'm stoked to check it out.

I'd depend my life on all of these.

If you have to have a coated blade, the ESEE-LS or ESEE-3 would get my vote. Both are comfortable to use, balance well, and come with good sheaths. The LS's sheath is perfect, as good as it gets. You can get either knife (with sheath) for around $100.

If you don't want a coated blade, I would go with something from Bark River.
