:D I have been looking to replace my Gerber that's been in my pocket for 10 years now. It's been a great little knife for everyday use but I want something with a little more "POP!". Who would you guys look to for a good carry knife that doesn't look like it came out of Wallmart?? Looking for something of a traditional style but without the weight and with a locking, single blade, that will last and hold an edge. Under $200

Thanks,

Randy

Well, you have narrowed it down to several hundred knives! lol

Actually, there is a Spyderco Native from Walmart now at $40 price point that is an excellent value.

Can you tell us more about what style blade you like? Type of steel you might be interested in?

Personally, I would start looking at Spyderco or Benchmade. They both make excellent folders.

I have the following:

Spyderco Delica, Endura and Native
Benchmade 550 Griptilian

I'm looking at getting either a Benchmade 710, 3550, 530 or 525 as my next knife purchase.

The only stipulation on the blade is I do not like a serrated edge. I have always been able to put an edge that will shave your face so I don't need to saw through what I am cutting. I mostly just want a knife for everyday use. Blade style isn't that important as long as it performs. I have been looking at some Benchmade knives and they have my attention. I was just thinking about a custom. Looked at a few for around $300 just don't know if I want to drop that much yet for an everyday carry. Thanks for the info so far. The Benchmade 710 is looking better all the time.

Could you be a tad bit MORE specific as to what you are looking for?? What knives did you look at that were around $300?

I looked at a few lightfoot Micro and some custom makes that were from 300-400. I like something along the lines of the Benchmade 710 or Osborne with plain blade.

How about a Buck/Mayo TNT? I think the Chris Reeves Sebenza is the best production knives out there, and worth every penny. How about a Combat Elite RRF; they are excellent! I hope this helps.

If you want something a little different you might take a look at the Case Slimlock knife. You don't hear much about it on the boards but it's an extremely nice looking knife and has an excellent fit and finish - comes w/high quality BG-42 steel and Amboynia burl scales. ( $167.00 @ knifeworks.com)

200 bucks is alot, i would go witha case for a small pocket knife. around 50 bucks and will last a lifetime.

I may have to get the Slimlock for a "dress knive" :) then the BM for a everyday carry..Man..I just can't call it a BM..Benchmade sounds much better. With a baby in the house "BM" takes on a new meaning.

I never knew I had so many quality knives to choose from. I have been away from knife collecting for about 15 years and things have changed a bit since.

Thanks again TKC

Is the BG-42 steel a quality steel? I guess I am going to have to take a remedial knife class just to get up to speed.

I live in Northern Indiana. Is there any good clubs in the South Bend area or shows this winter? Thanks again,

R

Yes, BG-42 is a quality steel!! You could post in the Community Center regarding knife clubs and knife shows, you would get more attention to your question, than here. PS: I forgot to welcome you to BF RandyW!! Please forgive me!!

Thanks for the welcome. Its a great site. I just wish I had got back into collecting a little sooner. Tony and Reese Bose both got me collecting when I was 14 when we moved up the road. Reese was in my class and we spent a lot of time chasin girls and hunting anything that was in a tree or under a bush. But I have only dabbled in the old knives since. Been some nice stuff on Ebay lately but without holding the knife in my hand I hate to bid much on blind faith. That's why I would like to find a local club to help me get back into collecting. At least this will help the cold winter pass, well that and time on the ice. Thanks again for all the info and look forward to spending more time on the forum.

I am glad that you are here!! Wow, that is cool that Reese & Tony Bose got you into knife collecting!! I DO hope you find a club in your area. I personally don't do the e-bay thing. I would encourage you to check out the Knife Exchange area here on BF, as the majority (99.9%) of members here are very honorable and wonderful to deal with. Perhaps you can pick something up in the KE. Or perhaps you could participate in one of the pass arounds, that way you can play with a knife, before you buy it.

If you ever see Reese at a show tell him you met the guy who he made wreck his bike right after taking a 15' fall from a tree. :) Its a wonder we are both still alive. I will be back home in a few weeks and Reese and I are going to get out and chase some cotton tails while I am down. You would die if you see what he uses to gut a squirrel with! ;) He made me a muskrat pattern with beautiful old green bone handles about 10 years ago and always gets on me for not carrying it. I wish I had just an ounce of his talent. Better get going..wife needs help with the kids. ..and thanks for the tip on Knife Exchange.

Happy Holiday's

Randy
