Looking for a good custom tactical/fighter

Hi (newbie here) and I usually just browse and read threads but finally decided to go ahead and make account.

Anyway, I'm looking for a nice tactical/fighter that will probably see moderate/heavy use on my next deployment. I don't really have the budget to spent $500+ on a knife, but I am not looking to buy a $60 CRKT and call it good. Honestly, my blade knowledge isn't very extensive. I know a little about steel qualities/blade shapes/construction etc.. just general stuff I suppose.

I have looked at several places including Busse, Spartan, Treeman, Scrap yard, but from what I have seen the designs I like are either too expensive, out of stock or discontinued. I am just wondering if anyone has a reccomendation for a good custom blade, that isn't too expensive and will perform well. Thanks in advance.

I'm sure someone will step up to the plate and help you out. Customs are usually expensive.

Well even limited editions.. It doesn't neccessarily have to be some custom damascus or anything.. I'm willing to spend sub $500. Just looking for more of a range than what I have already seen.

You can get some excellent service knives for under 500.
Jason Knight
Matt Lamey
Come to mind...

Just took a look @ Fehrman.. looking for more like this.. any more suggestions? I can't look at Jason Knight or Matt Lamey.. blocked @ work

What size of knife do you have in mind - blade length?

What is the importance to you of corrosion resistance versus ease of sharpening in the field?

How soon do you need the knife?

A great many custom knifemakers will give those on active duty a break on price and prioroity in delivery. I have no doubt you will be able to find a suitable piece for $500 and under.

Looking for a blade between 5"-7"

Corrosion resistance is important, however I would prefer non stainless.

I need it by the end of the year, if I can get something good though, not too worried about how fast I can get it.

Okay - not talking price yet - but do any of the following appeal to you in terms of design? Trying to get an idea of what fits your eye.

Tad Lynch (you'd forego ivory, of course)

Well the first two Foster blades are really nice. The Farr blade is beautiful. In terms of design, I like the shape of the Lynch as well.

I am looking for a Tanto style blade, but these are really nice. I am still open to anything. Looking for a combination of strength/function/design, not really a show piece.

I'd recommend ESEE Knives. Lots to choose from and are tough. Take a look at their site and also on the sub-forum here.

Personally I would not take a custom knife on a military deployment. I think that most folks would rather baby their customs a little more than a factory knife. The ESEE should meet all of your needs. The RC-3, RC-4, or RC-5 would make really nice choices for you.

I would recommend looking around for a custom while deployed, narrow you choices, and then pull the trigger on the custom knife. (All that tax-exempt money buys a lot more...been there...)

Then order this.....http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=762378
Sweet!

Busse knives?

They aren't custom and don't have the romance associated with them but they are tough!

Ya I was looking at Busse, but I'll have to wait until there is a new model that I like. Not currently looking for a gigantic kukri lol... I would love to own some of the older models, just way too much for me atm.

This is the kind of company I'm looking to buy from though. Maybe not neccesarily a true "custom" knife, but looking to buy from a smaller company, specializing in tough, heavy duty knives. Not looking for a Gerber or a Ka-bar.. but more of a Busse althought I am really just looking for options.

I have seen the ESEE line, and I already have an Ontario Ranger Bush (which to me is basically the same thing since Ontario used to make ESEE.) Nice knives, although not exactly what I'm looking for.

Tanto I can't really help you with - not my area.

But Tad is in your price range.

I would also recommend giving Burt a shout just to see how close he could get to price and delivery. An e-mail costs you nothing.

Wow that is a beautiful design. I am a big fan of clip points too.

Roger, do you have any suggestions for clip point blades?

What about a Becker BK2? They go for about $60. ESEE 5 is a great knife as well, that would probably be my first choice.
