All the people mentioning the Rat 1 from Ontario should definitely check out the Avispa. ESEE designed the Avispa to improve upon the Rat 1 design, and I have to say that it is a FAR better knife, for what seems to be a cheaper pricepoint. Think Rat 1 sized Zancudo blade, with a framelock Rat 1 shaped handle.

Try the Manix 2, s30v blade, G-10 scales and full steel liners. This thing is a beast. It will carry heavy, but that is what I like about it. I edc it and love it. Maybe a little over your price, but you might find one here in the sales forum that meets your monetary concerns.

I usually carry fixed knives with me, but I've noticed I need something smaller that I can use for the random situations I find myself in.

I've been looking at spyderco and kershaw. But I really don't like the design of the spyderco. So with kershaw, I'm looking at the Blur with s30v and like everything about it but the speed assist. But then again, I'm pretty new to folders. What can you suggest?

If it helps, I just need something I can use when I'm hiking/camping or up at my cabin (northern Montana) so I'd like something to clean small game with, clean fish, I need something reliable, and durable. I'd probably use this thing for everything and anything.

My budget is under $100 preferably even less than $75. I am not interested in partially serrated blades. As for the locking mechanism, I'm okay with anything other than linerlock. I just don't like them (probably because I took a chunk out of my finger when I was younger with one)

I appreciate your help!

My favorite tough-use folder in that price range is the Kershaw junkYardDog II. Love it.

Wow the Avispa looks really nice! Is that new for this year? I just did a quick Google search on them and it looks like not many people have them, and those who do have them for pre-order. How'd you get your hands on one?

Knifeworks. They're open to anyone.

If you are looking for a good user for hiking and camping might I suggest a Victorinox Farmer. It would compliment a fixed blade or folder nicely and would be great for many different situations. They are non locking though. Not a problem for me, but you might be different.

As suggested by someone else a Opinel would be good, but if you want something to clean game with their are some areas to get gunk stuck in.

All the folder suggestions from everyone are great. I know you said you do not like the look of the Spydercos, but again if your looking to gut anything with it I would personally get something that you can clean easily and does not have all sort of nooks and crannies to get blood and whatnot in. Look at the Spyderco Salt 1 and Pacific Salt. Might not be your cup of tea, but they will never rust and have no liners so they are very easily cleaned and sanitized.

boker plus titan drop
boker magnum line has some good edc blade options
ontario rat 1
gerber bear grylls scout was a surprisingly good edc choice!
cold steel code 4's

id say get the ZT 0566, its a little over your price range, can be had for about $115 and you can de assist the knife, i have one on the way and im really excited about it

Don't know if it's already been said but the zt 0350 is a really nice knife it is a liner lock but a very thick and amazingly strong one. I've skinned a few squirrels and a rabbit with mine, plenty sharp and a real nice blade shape. 100$ can easily buy one on the exchange

I'm going to sound like a bitch, but I just mean I cannot stand how it looks. I know it doesn't matter whatsoever for the functionality of the knife. But I'm picky with my knives hah

Now now, young padawan. Youll come around to spyderco. They always do.......

The thing about spydies is that you really cant like them until their in your hand and pocket for a week or two. I HATED spyderco looks at first and swore I would go full hipster about it, never giving into the seemingly unfounded hype (my thought process was that if it didnt look good, it must be a bad knife and everyone must be stupid to like it... LOL). But then I started getting bored with "standard" looking designs, and I was extremely curious as to the mystique surrounding spyderco on the forums. So i ordered a tenacious and I have never turned back. Now I have 5 and its my favorite brand. I have learned to see their beauty too, not only their functionality. Part of the beauty stems from the functionality, yes, but many of them actually look good in and of themselves now. I couldnt see it before, but you almost have to fill in the blanks on the knives for them to look really good. Like fill in the choils and the space behind the hump in your mind, and they actually look pretty standard. So what Im really saying it that they are meant to be in your hand, so thats where they look best. I guess a lot of it is just getting used to them as well. Some I still cant stand, like the endura and a few others, but the sage series, Para 2, and native 5 are all good looking to me. The trick to warming up to the spyderco design philosophy for me was starting with shallower humps and moving to para 2 sized ones. So a native 5 would be the best choice, then a sage, then a para 2/delica, etc.

Just read more of the thread. Im with Mr Krieg. Just got my 0566 last week, and it is one sweet blade. Deassisted and given time to break in, it flips like a dream and is smooth as glass. Tough as hell too, and you cant beat Elmax for a folder costing 115!

You speak the truth. Spyderco is the best brand HANDS DOWN! You can probably tell I love them because of my username. :) I just got a Paramilitary 2 and it is by far the best knife I have ever owned. I love the blade shape, precise tip, carry weight, ergonomics, lock mechanism, blade steel (S30V), and the looks. Please reconsider OP!

Here I was going to give you new and important information, but it looks like dozens of people have already recommended the Spyderco ParaMilitary 2 (wonderful ergonomics and blade shape), and the various models of the Benchmade Griptilians (the Axis lock is the best lock ever), which would be my picks. I can add one point: Doug Ritter and Knifeworks.com have an exclusive version of the Griptilian, often referred to as the Ritter Grip, that has a much nicer blade than either of the blade styles that Benchmade offers.
