I usually carry fixed knives with me, but I've noticed I need something smaller that I can use for the random situations I find myself in.
I've been looking at spyderco and kershaw. But I really don't like the design of the spyderco. So with kershaw, I'm looking at the Blur with s30v and like everything about it but the speed assist. But then again, I'm pretty new to folders. What can you suggest?
If it helps, I just need something I can use when I'm hiking/camping or up at my cabin (northern Montana) so I'd like something to clean small game with, clean fish, I need something reliable, and durable. I'd probably use this thing for everything and anything.
My budget is under $100 preferably even less than $75. I am not interested in partially serrated blades. As for the locking mechanism, I'm okay with anything other than linerlock. I just don't like them (probably because I took a chunk out of my finger when I was younger with one)
I appreciate your help!
All the people mentioning the Rat 1 from Ontario should definitely check out the Avispa. ESEE designed the Avispa to improve upon the Rat 1 design, and I have to say that it is a FAR better knife, for what seems to be a cheaper pricepoint. Think Rat 1 sized Zancudo blade, with a framelock Rat 1 shaped handle.
Wow the Avispa looks really nice! Is that new for this year? I just did a quick Google search on them and it looks like not many people have them, and those who do have them for pre-order. How'd you get your hands on one?
Knifeworks. They're open to anyone.
I'm going to sound like a bitch, but I just mean I cannot stand how it looks. I know it doesn't matter whatsoever for the functionality of the knife. But I'm picky with my knives hah
Now now, young padawan. Youll come around to spyderco. They always do.......
The thing about spydies is that you really cant like them until their in your hand and pocket for a week or two. I HATED spyderco looks at first and swore I would go full hipster about it, never giving into the seemingly unfounded hype (my thought process was that if it didnt look good, it must be a bad knife and everyone must be stupid to like it... LOL). But then I started getting bored with "standard" looking designs, and I was extremely curious as to the mystique surrounding spyderco on the forums. So i ordered a tenacious and I have never turned back. Now I have 5 and its my favorite brand. I have learned to see their beauty too, not only their functionality. Part of the beauty stems from the functionality, yes, but many of them actually look good in and of themselves now. I couldnt see it before, but you almost have to fill in the blanks on the knives for them to look really good. Like fill in the choils and the space behind the hump in your mind, and they actually look pretty standard. So what Im really saying it that they are meant to be in your hand, so thats where they look best. I guess a lot of it is just getting used to them as well. Some I still cant stand, like the endura and a few others, but the sage series, Para 2, and native 5 are all good looking to me. The trick to warming up to the spyderco design philosophy for me was starting with shallower humps and moving to para 2 sized ones. So a native 5 would be the best choice, then a sage, then a para 2/delica, etc.
Just read more of the thread. Im with Mr Krieg. Just got my 0566 last week, and it is one sweet blade. Deassisted and given time to break in, it flips like a dream and is smooth as glass. Tough as hell too, and you cant beat Elmax for a folder costing 115!
