Welcome to the forums. I am sure you are going to get many answers about this question. There are several good ones to pick from. I think the ZT series like the 560, 550, would be good. I tell you what you might enjoy doing. He would have to talk to your parents but you could design your own knife that you like and let Alan Davis make it for you. I think that with your price range as long as you dont want something fancy he can do it for you. You can pick the blade shape, steel, handle type and shape, ect. Welcome to the forums and good luck! Wow! Cool parents. When I was you age, I was carrying a Boy Scout Buck folder everywhere.

You can get a nice EDC for less than $300. You're going to get a ton of responses and you'll probably have to narrow it down a bit.

I can tell you what I carry. My go to EDC (probably 80% of the time) is the Ka-bar BK14. The rest of the time I carry the Ka-bar Phat Bob.

Good luck!

The large Becker models are designed as a mixture of combat and utility.

The BK7 will serve you well.

I would recommend spending less than that. No offence but at thirteen you or one of your friends is going to trash it.

Don't forget to get sharpening materials. Might want to spend more on that and less on the knife. Those would probably last you forever while the knife will get used, abused, and\or lost.

can you elaborate at all? what kind of cutting do you plan to do? how big? how light or heavy? what blade shape do you like? will it be a "hard use" or more of an "EDC" knife? What kind of lock do you prefer etc... these are all questions you have to ask yourself before you can even begin to pick the knife that is right for you.

All my friends aren't in to knives but one is and he has a $900 folding knife and he's younger than me
But I'm more in to knife fighting and collecting and I have sharpening materials

It would be irresponsible for any adult on this forum to reccomend a knife for a 13 year old to edc, for "self defense". Little kids dont need to carry weapons for defense.. If you get into a fist-fight, take your licks like every other young boy before you, or start lifting weights.. Stay away from the gangs, and dont go out looking for trouble and trouble shouldnt find you. If you want to impress your friend with the $900 knife, just buy a fake Sebenza and pretend its real.. If you need a good camping knife get a $40 Mora. No child needs custom quality cutlery because he thinks he lives in a bad neighborhood. Sorry this probably isnt what you wanted to hear, but when youre that age, things usually arent as bad as you think they are, and there could be serious consequences if you get in trouble with a large folding knife in your pocket, or if you pull it out during an altercation because you think it will scare someone away. You could end up in jail, or worse.. dead.

you are looking for somthing that does not exist.

* a good edc knife is generally thin and light and is used to cut food for boxes, tape, food, zip ties etc

* a survval knife sould be from about 5-9 inches and a fixed blade for taking down small trees and batonning an well as skinning

* a tactical knife is a knife for selfe defense and generally deploys fast and has a unique blade shape for slicing flesh.

if you want a knife that will do all 3 then you will have a knife that sucks horribly at all 3. you need 3 knives to handle each task. a knife that is good at all 3 is just a fantasy.

for edc i would get a benchmade griptilian and a victornox tinker. thats about $120. that is an excelent edc combo and is all you should spend on a knife at a young age. they are both very easy to sharpen as well.

for a decent survival knife i would say the buck hoodlum or the hood punk. both will do everything you need at a fair price.

i never reccomend carrying a knife for self defense!!!!!!! you being 13 would be easily over taken by somebody who wants to hurt you regardless of a knife and will probably kill you with your own knife. not to mention at such a young age i dont want you using a knife when it is not needed or warranted. i dont think you understand what happens when a knife fight or knife self defense occurs. the ammount of gore is so shocking it will scar you for life. there will be blood, guts, brains, flesh and feces everywhere and you will be covered in it. im training to be an emt and firefighter so i would know. it is just horrible and the best thing to do is pay attention and never put yourself at risk in the first place. when you are 21 get your ccw permit. but please avoid a knife conflict at all costs!!!!!

sorry for the rant but it is somthing very few people understand

Guys this kid didn't come in for a lecture
at the end of the day he can make his own decisions and he will
OP,
I think a benchmade 275 adamas would serve you well
Hope that helps

1.) I'll agree that carrying a knife for self defense is not the best bet. I understand living in a not so great area, and there are shady people. For the most part if you stay clear of shady people and trouble they aren't likely to find you. This being said, I EDC two knives every day. Strictly for EDC purposes. But I know if something did come up, they would be there.
2.) Just because your friend has a $900 knife doesn't really mean you need one. They're nice and it's always great to have a nice knife, but you're young and I'm sure you'll get there someday. As long as you're happy and impressed with what you have, that's all that truly matters.
3.) It IS possible to have a knife that is good at all three things.
EDC - something that will handle and tackle all the tasks you need done, an EDC is not always light and thin. I EDC a ZT 0560 every day.
Survival - If the folder is tough, solid, and made to take hard use, it will work. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that my folder(s) could and would handle this type of use.
Tactical - They have a certain look and are well known as self defense blades. Something that deploys quick and smooth is more ideal for this.

With all of this being said, I say get a Zero Tolerance knife. These fit the bill in all three departments.
Ones to look at:
ZT 0350 - This fits the liner lock you said you like but isn't really close to $300 and it sounds like you want something close to or at $300. It also isn't super large, which it sounds like you want a pocket monster.

ZT 0301 - Large, tough, ti frame lock, built like a tank, and you just can't beat it.

ZT 0550 - Large tough, manual, good steel, feels awesome in hand.

ZT 0560 - My personal favorite. Big, beautiful, not super heavy, heck of an EDC and would take anything I'd throw at it. Awesome blade steel and can be found here on the forums for a really good price.

I started out on this forum on a different tag, a long time ago, around the same age with the same mentality as you. As you grow, you will begin to realize that carrying around your "big scary tacticool blade" so people won't mess with you might not be the best idea. A real world knifing is not something you want to be a part of. A knife is a deadly weapon, and pulling one in a situation where it isn't legally justified will land you an assault with a deadly weapon charge, attempted murder, etc. Being a deadly weapon, it provides legal justification for me to shoot anyone that presented one during an altercation or with otherwise harmful intentions.

You need to be very familiar with the law in your area, you need to know when to and how to use that weapon you are carrying if a situation ever arose, and most of all, you cannot FOR A SECOND rely on you weapon as a deterrent, hoping that the assailant will cower in fear and run. Using a knife on another human being is extremely gruesome and personal. I highly doubt at thirteen, you have obtained the level of maturity, or understand the responsibility that comes with carrying a deadly weapon. Your most powerful weapon is your mind. Situational awareness is the most important. Avoiding confrontation, staying away from shady places or situations, and staying mentally sharp will take you a long way.

It's probably not what you wanted to hear, but it may save you from a heap of legal problems, or a bullet.

Im not trying to be a jerk but Just get a victorinox and spyderco/kershaw/Benchmade. Have your parents put the other $200ish dollars in a savings account for college or your first car.

Also, aren't you supposed to be 13 to join BFC? Not 13 in a few months?

What if that decision is to pull a knife as a deterrent and he gets more than he bargains for. I would much rather get the crap beat out of me than have my attacker use my knife against me and let me see what I ate for lunch that day...

If you think you're into knife fighting then you haven't got any training or understanding of what that is... Its not like TV or the movies... in a knife fight everyone gets cut bad, if you're really lucky the other guy gets cut worse.

I'm all for self defense, but a knife is close to the last choice I would make. Hell a sturdy wooden stick would be better.

Learn about mindset, situational awareness, get training at a well known and respectable dojo that covers the mental as well a physical aspects, learn how to run fast, think fast, and use your head.

The trickest $2000 fighting knife wouldn't save you if you don't have all the rest of it. Seriously have your parents buy you lessons instead.

At least you were honest and told us your age up front. But to recommend a knife that you plainly state will be used for self-defense, ie, it will be used heavily and for edc but mainly for self defense there's a lot bad people where I live I carry to knives 24/7 is completely irresponsible for any member of this board to do! A big folding knife that you pull out for self defense use is likely to end up getting you badly hurt, or worse killed. As was mentioned, lift weights, take up martial art's, but don't get a knife.

Btw, what is the $900 folder that your younger friend has? And how did he get $900 to buy it with?
