Looking for a good edc folding survival/combat knife

What if that decision is to pull a knife as a deterrent and he gets more than he bargains for. I would much rather get the crap beat out of me than have my attacker use my knife against me and let me see what I ate for lunch that day...

AMEN brother!

pulling a knife out during a fight usually only make things worse!! So many youngsters nowdays are scared and they just dont get it. NO ONE wants to get beat up in a fight, but when someone pulls out a knife or a gun the situation gets elevated from a "fight" to a life or death battle.. A knife is at most a false sense of security for the untrained user and even if you're highly trained; in a knife fight, BOTH people are going to get cut!
I agree that he can, and will make his own decision. but i also think its wrong for the adults of this forum to encourage him.

this post is proof you are not mature enough to even think about self defense. if you want to see what a knife fight looks like get you and your friend to put on a white t-shirt and each of you get a sharpie and simulate a knife fight. both of you will be covered in black marks.

im 17 years old. i am training as a firefighter/EMT through our local department and do ride alongs weekly. i have had people go into full cardiac arrest and die in my hands. i have picked up dead people out of bed's, i have been in the ambulance when an 8 year old is going into shock and his entire body is violently shaking, ive been on scene when dead 19 year olds where pulled out of car crahes, ive seen lawn mower accidents, saw accidents, grinder accidents and a bunch of other crap like burns from fires.

YOU HAVE NO F****** CLUE HOW REAL AND SERIOUS DEATH IS!!!!!!

you should never carry a knife to harm other's. you will be hurt as bad as them. you have proved you dont know when to use or when not to use force. a knife fight is possibly the most grizzly, disturbing slow death you can face on this planet.

this is not about how tough or big you are or how bad of a neighborhood you live in. this is about ending a damn life!!!!!

IF YOU WANT TO BE SAFE CARRY A BRIGHT LIGHT, TAZER AND MACE. BE ALLERT AND TRAVLE IN GROUPS WHEN POSSIBLE.

KILL SOMEBODY WITH A KNIFE AND IT IS POSSIBLE YOU WILL BE IN JUVIE BECAUSE THE DEFENSE WAS NOT NECESSARY OR OVER EXCESSIVE OR IT IS POSSIBLE YOU WILL END UP DEAD. CHOOSE WICH

To the OP, if there are alot of bad people in your neighborhood and if they are a bad as you say, I can pretty much guarantee you most of them will be packing something much more than a knife. I live in a not so friendly area myself but I would never rely on a knife to fight any of the people around here. Most are packing firearms and have about a dozen or so friends who would not think twice about ganging up on you. The OP said he takes martial arts lessons, I'd keep working on that and not worry about using a knife for defense. I know a couple of guys who train in martial arts and I'll tell you if I was a bad guy, a knife of any kind is the LAST thing I'd want to pull on them. Keep up with your martial art training, it would probably suit you better foe self defense at your age.

Now if you want a knife for EDC or just because you like knives, that's different and some of the guys here have already given some good recommendations.

He's gonna do what's he's going to do regardless of what you say. He came in to get a recommendation on a blade for his purposes
It doesn't matter if there right or wrong because he isn't asking that
Answer the question, what he does is his business

First of all bryan715 I'm sorry for what you've been though I've seen similar things I've watched my grandmother and my aunt die right in front of me I've been to more funerals in 13 years than any person should go through i started walking at my great aunts funeral I've seen my dad have 23 seizure in one day but im just a 13 year old with to many knives don't want to hurt others the only reason I put the guy in the choke hold was because he kept punching me and hitting me in the back with a stick over and over I told him to stop but he wouldn't stop. I've took self defense classes and boxing and 3 martial arts which one had knife fighting that's why I wrote that and I know not to pull a knife on
someone that's why I've took so many fighting classes and I'm a collector I carry what I collect to show or trade with other collector .Im not some knife wielding nut and I don't want everyone thinking I'm to immature to handle knives the last thing I want to do is kill someone.I might stab someone if they threaten me or my familys lives with a loaded gun but that's my last choice. But dude please chill out I'm not killer

6 ft tall at 13? I am skeptical.
If you had taken (and mastered) 3 forms of martial arts, you would have come to realize that knives are not the best defense. No offense, but I've never seen a 13 year old competent in 3 forms of martial arts. It takes years of dedication to become truly proficient at a SINGLE martial art. Wisdom and the intelligence to not get INTO a fight is more important than any weapons. I've lived in rough areas (Down town east-side vancouver. Dealers, hookers, gangs, shootings etc) and I've never once gotten into trouble. Neither have my friends. Not once have I pulled a knife on someone. I've had to walk away from situations before. Who cares if I loose face, at least I didn't loose teeth.

I'd like to see a picture of all your knives lined up with a little piece of paper that says "Blade Jr" on it. I think I smell something fishy. If you don't post it, people will just assume you are lying ;)

It sounds like you have a lot of fear and lack self confidence. Your best bet would be a case peanut and some counseling.

If you must carry a SD knife, just get a mora. $40 and if you know how to use it, will put any bully in the ground or in the ER. Save the rest of the money for your first session with your attorney.

This may sound silly to some, but to the OP have your dad watch Saving Private Ryan or even better the WWII in HD series by History Channel. Both will show you that it's not as cool as it may seem to have to stab someone to save your own life as many of those men had to in war time.

I mostly recommend the WWII in HD series. There are quite a few accounts read directly from soldier's journals about the first time they had to stab or otherwise murder someone with their hands to save their own life. Most of them immediately threw up after from the shock and horror of what they had done (not kidding, one soldier was still surrounded by other enemy troops and had to bury his face into the dirt to throw up just so he wouldn't make any noise and be found).

I am not saying this to bring you down, but I used to have a similiar mentality when I was younger and my dad saw that and he showed me movies and made me learn and listen to parts of history that show you that having to kill someone is the last thing you really want to put yourself through even when it's to save your own life, because you will not just walk away happy and proud after that.

If you are serious about SD tell them to spend the 300 bucks on Jiu Jitsu lessons, I do Jiu Jitsu and I feel it gives me much more confidence to take care of myself than my knives (which I obviously love and carry as well).

Let me tell you that if the average bad guy goes after a 13 year old, and said 13 year old pulls out a combat knife... said 13 year old is not only going to get robbed, but likely stomped... and the knife stolen.

I did not say I mastered them I took them all in one class together for 6months and the boxing for 8months the only reason I quit was that during winter I slipped on some ice and seriously hurt my back and had to quit all and I'll put up that picture in might about a day or two to find them all but the leatherman I lost it I will try to find it but I'll put the photo up

dudes chill out and just help the kid! for pete sake bladeforums can be so "preppy"

anyway a ZT 301 or 560 would work great for all of the above and remember the best defense is avoidance.

I won't address your followup posts. They seem very dubious.
Regarding your first post; I'd suggest using other legal means to employ self defense before turning to a knife. Even then, I'd suggest a smaller fixed blade, as they tend to take less time to deploy, are stronger and will not fail on you.

If you are certain you need a folding knife, I'd suggest a Spyderco Resilience. Cheap, reliable with good steel, keeps a very sharp edge, slices and stabs well.

Bold part holds true. I understand wanting to prepare for those rare 'what if' situations where you only have the choice of using that last ditch weapon... I really do. However, please take into consideration that if you're not there to receive an attack, you won't have to deal with it.
