Hi, Im a newbie here and would like your opinions about the two knife co. selected. I am interested in the Becker and or Ontario knives. Or other if the price is right UNDER $100. What are your opinions about these two knives? Or your own choice?

Will be used for general purpose, hunting, fishing, camping and whatever else that this blade may encounter. Nope I'm not going over $100. Thanks.

cold steel master hunter in Carbon V. not all CS knives are good, but this has a good reputation.

also, a short (5") ka-bar "marine corps" knife. make sure its ka-bar brand....NOT ontario.

both of these should be under $60 or so.

spend another $20-30 on a SAK to complement the knife.

You won't go wrong with a Becker, but they might be a little heavy-duty for some of your intended uses. The CS Master Hunter would indeed be a good choice for a slimmer blade with extremely similar steel. *cough* Ontario offers good bang for the buck if you get a fair price, but some will say there are quality control issues; poorly tempered blades and the like. Ontario will fix any such issues, however.

If you're willing to go to the limits of your $100 budget, there are more than a few Bark River offerings you may like (Forager, Gameskeeper, Northstar, et al) or perhaps Fallkniven if you want a synthetic handle. Either way you're getting a much more refined piece than Ontario or Becker could offer. The convex edges on the Bark Rivers are also great for extended use.

i also have heard of control issues with ontario.

+1 on bark river knives......i own a fox river....but that particular model is over $100. but check out their other models.

Ontario SP-6 is my fave.
It's 8" & perfectly balanced & built in my eyes.
Easy to sharpen with 1095 steel.
The SP-1 is it's little brother at 7".
I like rubber handles for outdoors & wet conditions too.
Anything under 7"s is a fishin knife to me.

Look into the Kershaw Echo for a sweet little belt knife for the smaller chores around camp or in a boat.

I have a Cold Steel Master Hunter and it is a lot for the money. I think for what it would cost and for what you want that you can't go wrong with it in the Carbon V steel. Its the same steel as the Becker line uses and the handle is perhaps the best thing about it. Its a great all around user. For the $56.21 price and some shipping it is going to be tough if not impossible to find more knife in the same price point. I got mine at www.Newgraham.com

I'm waiting until tomorrow so I can go get me another Sebbie, but my next purchase after that will probably be an Ontario RAT-3.

I really like the Becker BK7 and the BK10, nice knives. The Ka-Bar knives are nice too. You can get theses knife under 75 dollars.

Bk10 is what I recommend too.
Another one would be the Ontario TAC, it looks good but I have no personal experience with Ontario knives.

The Spyderco Temperance is an EXCELLENT fixed-blade knife...Well worth a look.

I gotta go with Dann. Even though I'm a big Swamp Rat/Busse fan, I'd certainly go with Spyderco over CS or Ontario.

I don't have any CS stuff, but had 2 Ontario Ka-Bars break on me just slicing cardboard.

It's only expensive if you get less than what you pay for.

I have the becker companion but havent had a chance to use it.I dont regret the purchase and dought I will,I like that style grind.I did not know becker used the same steel as cold steel.Beckercalls theres a special 0170-6c and this is what CS calls carbon V?Does the guy in the more proof video know about this?Did anyone else watch that and think "on the street you would think his just another out of shape 40ish guy,but then if you messed with him he would just pretty much open you up in the blink of an eye with a simitar or 6"voyager or something?

For a medium sized (5 1/4") camp/hunting knife the Becker Campanion is a very good choice for the money. (67.95 @ knifeworks.com)

If you're looking for something bigger the Kershaw Outcast with a 10" blade of D2 steel and a Ti-nitride coating is an excellent buy at just under 60 bucks. ($59.40 @ knifeworks.com)

What size were you looking for?? Benchmade black class Nimravus 140 is a useful mid size knife for me. I have both serr. and Plain edge. Even serr. are super sharp out of box.

About a year ago I got a Becker Crewman for the same purposes that you originally described, and it performs excellently. It is rather overly heavy duty for these uses, but not to the point of being a hinderance. It seems just about indestructable and has a surprisingly keen edge for such a big knife. Paired with a small folder or a multi tool, it can't be beat!
