Looking for something in the region of an 8 inch blade....

Doesen't need to be ture Stainless, DOES need to be flat ground.

Preferably a production knife, or a moderately priced custom.

Can anyone offer suggestions??

TIA

What do you mean by "survival knife" ? The knife with hollow handle? Then go with Chris Reeve Project I or II.

Or if hollow handle isn't requirment, then go with Ranger knives (rangerknives.com). You can search the opinions here on bladeforums or at knifeforums.com (there is Ranger knives forum there). They are really good.

EDIT: RD6 has 6" blade, it is just for illustration of look, if you want 8" blade go with RD7 or RD9. You can also ask Justin (owner of Ranger knives) to make a special one)

If you're looking for a do-it-all utility knife for the outdoors, get one of Brian Goode's custom 01 blades. He makes stock removal fixed blades and differentially tempers them with a torch so you end up getting incredible edge properties and a non-brittle spine, plus his handle contours are really nice coke-bottle ones. I've never felt better knife ergos. He can also give your knife a steel lip coming out of the back of the handle like the one above for hammering (if you want to use it for driving tent stakes or breaking windows in an emergency etc.). Personally, I'd ask for one without the lip with the brass lined thong hole because it makes the knife a little more comfortable. Draw him a sketch in MS paint and he can make exactly what you want. He took no more than a few months with me, and that was partly because I needed help working out the details. If you really know what you want and can tell him, the process will be much quicker. You can also get nice vulcanized liners like the ones in the picture below. His site is http://www.bgoodeknives.com

I would get a Ranger RD7, although it is called a RD7 it has like a 7.5 inch cutting edge and a 8 inch long blade total. They are also flat ground an top quality and toughness.

Is Swamp Rat flat-ground?

They have high flat grinds on most of their blades, some are to the spine and others leave a small amount at full stock thickness.
