First of all, no fixed blades in the boy scouts is un-American.
Spyderco, Benchmade, Buck, and Kershaw are the only brands worth looking at as far as folders go. Specifically:
Spyderco:
Endura: Can be plain edge, combo, or fully serrated (spyderco does have the best serrations), very ergonomic with an excellent, durable steel.
Delica: Same as Endura only smaller
Tenacious: Cheap in price but not in quality. Solid lockup, average steel, good ergonomics.
Benchmade: Any of the Griptillians.
Buck: Vantage Pro (best value for sure. G10 handle, premium knife steel, but tougher to sharpen if you're not a skilled sharpener. All for about $50)
Kershaw: I'd go with the Lahar over most of the others. The Skyline is a great knife and value, but the beadblast finish on most of kershaw's knives attract rust. Not a big deal if you maintain the blade though.
