Live in southern maine, we have sporting goods stores but they all usually carry low end knives. Wondering if anyone knows good places here. Id love somewhere where i can inspect something before buying.

See if there are any knife shows around you, a Bass Pro shops (Although they are overpriced) and worst case scenario, try a pawn shop.

My experience is that internet stores have better prices and better knives. I usually stay away from the commercial sporting good stores for knife purchases.
I like Scrap Yard, Swamp Rat, Busse, ESEE, and Becker.
They are usually found on the internet for the best prices, and they have the best warranties. IMO

Welcome to BF:)

Make sure they're knife shows and not GUN and knife shows. Someplaces a gun and knife show will have decent knives in there but for the most part it's usually junk. I have the same problem really. I live near a big city and I don't know of any place to look for the knives I'm interested in. Of course I have expensive tastes. :D

I know online is good but i like to try things out, see if they fit me, or if it feels right in hand. Also, i just love seeing in person, soe blades cant be done justice by pics.

We dont have bass pro, we got a cabelas but its just got gerbers and such.

How about Freeport Knife Co. in Freeport, Maine...was there a few years ago traveling through the area.

Yea, from what I remember it was pretty good. They are big Victorinox dealers and sell other brands as well such as Almar, Benchmade, Buck, Case, Chris Reeve, Ka-bar, Columbia River, Gerber, SOG, Spyderco. They sell a lot of kitchen cutlery as well as kitchen "gadgets". Google Freeport Knife Co.
