Any advies ?

CS, traditional, ...

Does anyone know which kurki the Gurkha really use ?

thanks in advance.

The original Gurkha mostly preferred to use there own Kukri made by their village smith as the British ones were military issue (made by the cheapest bidder, not the best quality, etc). There were some that did use the military issue kukri, especially the later models (WWI and WWII).

Some of the traditional kukri can get very expensive, so it depends on how much you want to spend and what you are going to do with it.

Kukri House (http://www.khukurihouseonline.com/) - functional
Himalayan Imports (http://www.himalayan-imports.com/) - higher end, more $
Tora Kukri (http://www.toratoratora.co.uk/) - higher end, more $

Check out the Himalayan Imports forum in the Manufacturers area.

sunshaker has it right, I still support HI though, to me they are ths bee's knee's.

Bark River khukuri, interresting.

But at the moment, I'm sold to HI. The step is high for Bark River, but if someone can make something as decent as Hi, I think it's them.

I don't think they would put a plastic handle on it :o

Tora's Bushcraft Kukri (http://www.toratoratora.co.uk/kukri/details.asp?id=74) is very tempting because of the useful size of the karda. Not really tempted by the rest of their kukri.

Every single HI kukri is tempting, and that says something right there. I'm sure I could place a special order for a kukri with a larger karda from them.

They are working on this ;)

Or check the Koster forum for a Koster Karda. Those are simply great.

To quote myself in a thread on a highly similar subject posted earlier this week:

The [HI] Kamis are masters of their craft. Every knife is hand made, start to finish, with craftsmen paying attention to every detail. HI was founded on the principle of bringing honest work to hard-up people by producing high-quality products at reasonable prices.

Thanks everybody for replies, I'll probably go with a HI ...

Is there a well balanced model for knife fighting ? And wich length is the best ? 12", 15", 20" ...the HI Kobra seems interesting

Thanks in advance.

That's a matter of choice.

I would go for a military model, but some think else way and I respect that. Check this out.

I am in the minority here but I prefer the CS Gurka Kukri. I am partial to kraton and kydex over wood and leather.

I have both models, I really like the Gurka Kukri, I just find myself picking up my wood handled AK much more often. I sanded the handles to fit my hand better and its just been a fantastic chopper. But I tend to lean with wood and leather myself...just preferences.

I used to have a CS Gurka Lite several years ago. It was ok as far as expensive machetes go. If you want a real solid piece of actual factual khukuri, check out HI or Tora. If you're buying stateside, then HI is a great way to get a lot of khuk for a very reasonable price. All pricing includes shipping in the continental US. Also, be sure to stop by the HI forums to check out the deals of the day. Every so often, usually a couple times a week, Yangdu will post up some of her famous deals. Usually these a khuks with minor rust staining, a slight crack in the handle, or a scuffed up scabbard. However, the savings are HUGE. It's a great way to break into the khukuri world without spending a fortune...yet still getting your hands on the "real deal".

Thanks a lot for your reply, I'll check soon !

Obviously you never saw a khuk kydex sheath made by Dan Koster :p
He doesn't make Kraton handles though. For the price of the Kukri and sheath I can get 3 SK-5 CS Gurka Kukri's or one San Mai. I would much rather have the CS kukri as the traditionals I see around here just don't appeal to me.

Ok, that's a matter of personal taste and I can't argue with that.

But I can say I got a 15" BAS by Bura, not even a blem, and a Koster sheath for less than 100$. Ok, I got lucky.

For fighting / martial arts you may want to consider a Sirupati.
