looking for a good pocketable fixed blade

Hello all, Im looking for ideas on a new knife. Right now I EDC a KA-BAR short. I like it, but its a little too large to conceal well, and it gets terrified looks when its used in public. I need a robust fixed blade that I can EDC in my pocket. Preferably something 5"-6" in length at most. It needs to be able to take a beating and be good to hold. Id like something slim, and not threatening looking so I can use it in public, but it does need a good sharp point for punching holes in things. Id like a slim sheath that is pocket friendly. I expect Ill have to go custom on this project, and Ive gotten a quote from a custom maker, but before I go ahead and get something made I wanted ideas on my design and suggestions. Also if what I want exists already I would love to know.

This is the drawing I sent to a knifemaker for a quote.

Try a Bark River City Knife. I pocket carry one often. You might also look into Don Cowles knives. He specializes in small fixed blades for pocket carry and makes great little pocket clip sheaths for them. His customs are expensive, but he has a production model I think he sells for $99 with the pocket clip sheath.

The BR 'City' is a great suggestion.

I'd also recommend taking a look at the Blind Horse 'Frontier First' patch knife.

Those Don Cowles are beautiful, so is the bark river, theyre a little more elegant than I had in mind, since I use them as working tools, but wow.

This one is almost exactly how I visualized a knife, maybe a stouter blade, but I like this a lot.

I have a Blind Horse Frontier First Patch and, in my eyes at least, is the perfect pocket fixed blade. I like it a lot and think it is worth taking a look at.

Have a great day,
Jeff

This. BHK has quite a few pocket size fix blades and they are very people friendly.

If you decide to go custom, TK Steingass makes excellent custom fixed blades and provides a nice sheath. Reasonable wait time, great guy.

Sharpshooter makes a pocket sheath for the ESEE 3. It may be a bit larger than what you're looking for.

Street Beat looks promising
Im looking for similar purposes as this thread, actually.

Not sure if it comes through in my poor drawing, but I had an idea for something pocket friendly where the sheath is concerned. I thought about having something made of whatever the handle scales are made of, that fits seamlessly against the scales with a place to put a finger on the choil for ease of removal. The whole design of the knife has the widest point at the choil so it fits slim in the pocket but has some substance where its actually held. I also had a bit of exposed steel at the butt for a bit of a pommel. Does this sound like a good idea from a usability perspective? I know when I got quotes from a knifemaker, he couldnt make such a sheath, and I know that its really a tall order, but does anyone know of a place I may be able to have something like that built? This knife is sort of a "what would make me stop carrying a KA-BAR?" design.

Bark River has an endless array of small, pocketable fixed blades, in a variety of different shapes, handles and steels. I have an OMF knife (semi-wharncliffe), 2.65" blade, about 5.5" overall, that is just great in the pocket. I suggest browsing their offerings.

Try Ragweed Forge. He has a wide selection of (mostly) Scandinavian blades that might fit your requirement, as well as blades and kits you can customize.

Another suggestion in regards to the "Custom" section. Alan Davis makes a great little pocketable fixed blade called the "Misery Whip" gets absolutely scary sharp:thumbup:

GEC makes a few very nice small fixed blades. They're around 7" OAL, and a bit under $100. Not overly similar to your drawing, though.

I did a mock up of my design in card stock. Its actual size, 5.5" long with a 1/8" thick blade. Any suggestions on this design if I were to have it made?
