Looking for a good "working" mini trapper

Hi all,

I have always liked the Trapper pattern for everyday use. I'm looking for a good one to use not collect. I checked out the Case offerings and they're okay but I'd like to know what else is out there...USA made highly preferred. The full size is too big for me to carry in pocket so I need a "mini" size.

Thanks

The Queen #51 mini-trapper has the wonderful D2 steel that makes it among the very best for a working knife. Comes in both the standard clip/spey trapper style, and in a jack version with clip and pen.

I like Moore Maker's offerings. Again, they come in various sizes and with carbon steel. I have a mini trapper that is just over 3" in length closed - I'll post pictures when I get the chance.

Thanks guys. How hard are these you mentioned to open? I don't care for pocket knives that are hard opening. My one and only Trapper which is pretty old is very easy.

At almost 4 inches, the Great Eastern 48 wouldn't exactly qualify as mini. It is, though, slim and certainly small compared to their 23 and 73 patterns. It's really pocketable. I have a few of them, and they all have a really smooth light to medium pull. There hasn't been a run of them in a little while, but there are still some kicking around at various dealers.

For an American-made working mini trapper, I don't think you can beat a yella Case.

You might be right. I checked the local places and they only had the large size in CV so I went looking on-line and found a Case on sale. It doesn't have yellow handles though but with magenta jigged bone with the Tru-sharp steel.

If case would just make a CV mini wharncliffe trapper I would buy it today.

I'm assuming you mean single blade,

A big case dealer that I can't name has one as an exclusive item right now, google is your friend; ;)
"Item #9221 - (3107W CV) YELLOW SYNTHETIC WHARNCLIFFE MINI TRAPPER(CV)"

They make a clip/wharnie 2 blade mini in yellow syn., red bone and the chestnut bone too.

Slipjoints are going to be generally hard to open especially when brand new. Even after some use I'd prefer if the back spring stayed solid as I've had a cheap slipjoint before and a blade that wants to fold in easy just isn't steady to work with.
If you're concerned maybe check out something like the mini Copperlock, it's a lockback that opens very easy.

IMO, the Case Mini Trapper is the one to get. Try to find a Pocket Worn Old Red Bone. Those are nice... even if stainless steel.... I think they have some CV ones, but I haven't tried them yet.

You are a good man. Thank you. The clip/wharnie 2 blade mini in CV is what I wish for. Sadly, it does not exist.

Actually my first knife was a Buck Trapper, 311 I think. Got it when I was a kid and it was / is easy open. Always worked like a champ...too bad they don't still make 'em.

I didn't think to mention earlier, but also consider the Fallkniven LTC. It's a very basic blade made of Fallkniven's high end 3G steel. It costs in the 60 dollar range. I believe it's the size you're looking for and the blade,as far as I can tell, would probably hold an edge longer than anything else you're looking at.

Well the deal is done...ordered two Case Mini Trappers yesterday. I haven't had a Case knife in about 35 years so I'm excited to see how they look and perform.
