Looking for feedback on the heavy duty multitools the kind you keep in your end of the world bag. Comfort in a EDC is not my main concern but ruggedness. I want to replace my old wave with something sturdier. I am looking at the core, supertool 200, swisstool X and the Swisstool spirit. I have handled the core and the X. I was leaning toward the X until i handled the core. the core has the lead currently. also i am aware the supertool 200 is being phased out in favor of the core but I can get one NIB and will be handling it for the first time tomorrow. Did anyone not like the locks on the supertool 200? I am also wondering if their is a major quality differnce between the core and the ST200? I have also wanted the Swiss tool X for a while but never handled the swiss tool spirit. does the smaller size of the spirit compromise the ruggedness?? Does victorinox still make the Swiss tool x or has the spirit replaced it?? Lots of questions but figured this was the place. The most important question is the core lthat much better/worse than the ST200. PLMN J

I was running a wave, the older one. I bought a Powerlock to replace it. It was larger and stronger and seemed easier to fix by keeping a spare part or two for my own installation. Plus can be configured how I want it.

I would rate the high end leathermen, Sog, and the swiss tool as equals. I never find a deal on the swiss tool or would have one in the collection. Have gotten tons of bargains on leathermen so have more of them. Finally got a Wal mart close out on Sogs and now have that one.

Thanks for the input dogrobber. I haven't looked at the sog multis. i am going to check my local walmart to see if they carry any or closing them out. Thanks J

I think the toughest overall may be the SOG PowerLock, but the Leatherman Surge and Victorinox SwissTool X are in the same class.

I have both the Surge and Spirit. Both are rugged, but the Surge is bigger and seems more heavy duty.

It sceamed durable but I will let you guys know if it doesn't live up to the feel. The swiss tool x is next on my list. Thanks for the imput. J

Have a good look at one of Leathermans newest the Surge.
Large beefy tool, one handed opening, great scissors..........the new leader in monster tools IMHO

Kap:cool:

In case you decide to try the SwissTool, my vote goes to the SwissTool X. My current EDC! =)

Go for gold - the new Leatherman Blast

SOG Powerlock T60 TiNi is the one I am looking at getting... that TiNi looks sweet too as well as making it more durable. can't get much tougher than that. I have the EOD B61 and love it... but I may have to give it to my brother as a gift.. then upgrade. :)

My vote is definately going to be for the Victorinox SwissTool X. I've carried one on my belt for the past four years and it still looks brand new. I have yet to go a day without using it for something (I work in IT, so I use it constantly).

As far as durability goes, I've had zero problems with it after heavy and vigorous use. I've used it to do everything from saw through a branch that fell on my friend's car one night, to using the hacksaw to saw through part of a computer case to modify it. It's tough, sturdy, weighty and solid and without a doubt one of the best purchases I've ever made. I can't recommend them enough.

One of the advantages that the Swisstool X has over other multitools, is that every tool opens from the closed position. That's right, you don't have to open the pliers to access any tools. The nose of the pliers is a little too wide to be called needlenose, but they're sturdy enough that I don't feel as though they'd break under stress.

All in all, I have zero complaints and recommend it to everyone who asks.

My usual vote for the Swisstool , i EDC a RS and have a X for spare incase i loose the RS ( lets face it i can only loose it , i dont think i could break it :D )

Get the Leatherman Charge Ti and be done with it.

Need something bigger? Leatherman Surge.

What and come unstuck with the first deep set screw you come to
the charge is great but the length of the screwdriver bits suck , and Leathermans rust if not cleaned very often especially if your near water or a marine enviroment which is worth considering if its going to be kept in a bag and not looked at daily .
Oh and welcome to the forums symphonyincminor

Cheers
