My father recently lost his old timer jr stockman and I'm looking for a similar
replacement as a christmas gift. He seems to like the 2-3/4 closed length and
doesnt want something bigger but a 3-1/4 closed may work.

Im looking for something of good quality in the 30-50 dollar range. (not so
expensive that he wont use it). I refuse to buy the crappy china blades, so
thats out too.

Any suggestions?

I used a Buck cadet as a work knife for years before I retired. Very tough, good cutting knife. Case also makes some very nice small stockmen in an assortment of handle material and choice of blade steel. Contrary to belief, I've not found the Case true sharp any worse than the Uncle Henry line from Schrade, or the steel in the Victorinox knives.

Greetings, I have a Cold Steel Jr. Stockman. The closed length is 3-1/4" NIB $35.00 Delivered]Carbon V Blades.

There are still quite a few "new old stock" USA Schrade 34OT's floating around on ebay. Generally they are as new, but don't come in a box. Here's one for $30 with free shipping:

Another suggestion would be a Moore Maker small stockman with yellow delrin handles. They come with 1095 hi carbon steel, same as the USA Old Timers.

Good luck and let us know what you get for your dad!

Case seems like it might be a good option. The "John Deere" small stockman would be right up his alley. :)

How do you tell what material the Case knife blades are made from?

The Moore Makers look nice too. Thanks for the suggestions!

A really nice one is the Queen small stockman. You can get it from Bill Horn for $47, and that is with a bone handle. I really like mine, the D2 holds a good edge.

The Canal Street small stockman is a beauty.

I highly recommend it. If the price is a bit offputting, then
I'd go with the Queen which has been mentioned.

Buck 303 cadet is a useful and sturdy American made tool at a good price. Gave my father-in-law one to replace his lost Old Timer around three years ago, and he's still bragging on it.

Buck Cadet for stainless, 420HC or 440C. My first choice would be a Queen stockman, D2 steel, stag or wood scales. I've had several Cadets, like em. My Queen stockman was my work EDC for a long time, and is still sharp. The Cadet is probably cheapest at Walmart, the Queen is right on the line.

I'd describe the Queen stockman in the same terms.

If the price of the Queen is offputting, the Buck is an excellent choice.

Another good option for about thirty dollars is a Boker carbon steel stockman.
Made in Solingen Germany. I have a few of them and have been very impressed
with the fit, finish, edge and durability.

Case 63032 CV medium stockman amber bone #079. Its a beauty and in your price range. I own 2 of them.

Well, after looking at nice knives all day I decided I should get one for myself too. ;)

Picked up a Boker 7474 classic with rosewood,

And a Case Lacewood small stockman.

Im just going to let him pick. Either way I win . I just like the nice wood handles and love the way these two look.

Yup, that's the one I was referring to - the 7474 Model from Boker.

I have some in bone, some in stag, but now I think I'll have to get one '
in rosewood too!

Well chosen my friend cappy900!. Either way you both win out.. Oh, and by the way, Welcome to your new home on the forum!.:)

I felt I needed to add one of my personal all time favorites here. This little stock knife is one hard work horse for its small 3 1/4 inch frame..
