Looking for a knife for my father in law

Hello all,

My father-in-law has expressed an interest in carrying a knife. He is a rather handy person and do it yourselfer. He currently carries a leatherman micra on his keys and that's about it.
He was over today visiting and handling my meager knife collection. I thought he would be more of a traditional person, but I was proved wrong.
He seemed very keen on a folder with a g10 handle. He did not care for liner locks. He seemed to like a blade around 3.25 or 3.5 inches. Forgot to mention that he doesn't care about a pocket clip, so either a knife without a clip or with a removable clip please.
My first idea was a spyderco native in g10. Fits pretty much every criteria but was hoping for something a bit less pricey as this will be his first time using an edc blade.
Any and all suggestions are welcome. Thanks folks!

I've bought mine a few Case knives over the years . Last year I got him a Damascus Kershaw Skyline and he loves it, it's a liner lock though. I got him a mini Griptilian recently that he likes.

I was wondering about the griptillian. I haven't had the chance to use myself though.

Cold steel American Lawman.

Really can't go wrong with a new Griptilian with G10 scales. I have a Ritter Grip with custom G10 and Carbon Fiber scales and love it. I just received a Manix 2 with G10 scales and S110V steel (As my self bought 50th B-day present) and I LOVE IT. Smooth action, both opening and closing it and I'm digging the color in person. You can remove the clip, and the weight isn't to bad at all. Didn't see you list a budget so there are a TON of options out there for you. Check out the bigger knife retailers and I'm pretty sure I saw one that had a search engine you can search by blade length, so that should also aid in narrowing down the one you get your FiL. Happy Hunting!

Despite popular opinion I don't like the griptilian but I also have larger hands than many. Maybe a manix?

If the OP balked at the price of a g10 native 5 I'm not sure how a g10 griptilian will be any better. They're even more expensive.

Any of the Kizer Vanguard series might also work well. I do think though that the CTS-XHP Cold Steels are some of the best value knives on the market.

Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara2 G10. 3.2" blade, G10 handles, back lock, and can be found for just over $30. Clip is removable, although for a knife that size, it might be awkward to carry it loose in pocket. The Meadowlark G10 might be a more comfortable size to carry clipless, although the blade is quite a bit shorter (just under 2.5"). But, the Native5 is also about 2.5" blade, so if you are considering that and the blade length is a bit more flexible, the Meadowlark may be worth a look. The Manix2 G10 is also close - G10 handles, CBBL lock, and less expensive than the Native5 (typically runs around $100), but the blade is also a bit under 3". Also, the Manix2 has a pretty big footprint when closed, so like the Cara Cara2, may be awkward to carry loose in pocket.

The new G10 Griptilians look great, but they're about $50 more expensive than the G10 Native. So, depending on how much price is a factor, that might rule that out. The HK Axis Folders (also made by Benchmade) run a bit under $100, have G10 handles, and also use the Axis lock. I like the Axis lock a lot, but it doesn't offer an especially strong bias closed. I probably wouldn't carry any of those clipless / loose in pocket. If you have a larger pocket slip or something, that might work.

I'm assuming if he doesn't like the liner lock, he won't be too fond of frame locks either?

Cara Cara 2 makes an increcible knife for the price and a very nice gift for any knife enthusiast, hard to beat for the money

Mine is FRN, but I've gifted 2 in G10 and they get much love from their owners, and get carried a lot!

I'm guessing if he doesn't like liner locks he probably won't like framelocks, which eliminates most Kizers.

I would say get a Manix 2, maybe with custom scales like mine. It will do just about anything you could ask a folding knife to do.

Here's mine with desert ironwood scales by sketchen:

I didn't realize the Cara Cara came in g10. I'm only familiar with the frn version. I'm not opposed to spending on the manix or native, just wanted to see if cheaper options were abailable. He seemed to really like my endura, but didn't care for the frn.
