Looking for a knife that I can use for most things

A practical knife would be something like an Esee model 4 or model 6. Either one will likely outlast all of us, and the maker has an excellent warranty. Both are likely available at your price range, and the maker offers a number of options on these. These are good designs and there are also hundreds of production and custom makers that offer very similar knives. You should be able to find one that works for you.

Go with something that sits comfortably in your hand, and make sure the sheath works with your preferred method of carry.

I know a lot of people that use knives daily and I know that none of them use a knife over 4 inches for everything daily carry except when they go camping, hunting or fishing or outdoor activities.

A large knife like you have shown is impractical for regular daily use unless you’re fighting grizzly bears on a regular basis. Lol.

I am a mechanic/ operator professionally and carry a 3.2 inch flipper and a small traditional also. And I do some hunting, camping and fishing in my off time and I mostly use a Buck 110 folding hunter and it does most of what I need. I do have some larger knives for camping but I don’t carry them, they are in my gear bag if I need them.

Big knives are appealing and they do fit some tasks but not as many as you think.

I think it's like owning a fast car....?
First few months it seems Really Fast.
After a couple years, it's not that fast anymore.....

At first a knife might seem Big, but then you get used to it, and it's just normal.
For me, a big blade seems safer.
I can see it.
I know where it is. Where the edge is. No surprises.
Plenty of room to hold on.

I regularly carry 5-7" edc, No problem .
4 seems small.

Im looking to get a knife of decent quality that I can use for multiple things from cutting an apple to doing something sturdy but I dont know what knife to get, Ive got barely any knowledge of knives, Im a really big fan of these knifes, because of the shape and the ring however some people say its inpractical, Im looking for something thats strong and can take damage, not be tiny, an around 5 inch blade thats reliable and will last me a few years or a good amount of time, mostly made out of metal AND the made thing it being not a straight blade - I dont mean for it to look like a sickle just not straight (like the ones in the pics) + ideally under £150. any recommendations are much appriciated (sorry for the bad description)
If I remember correctly, you live somewhere in the UK, right? Your laws there are very strict and I would make sure whatever you purchase is something that won't get you thrown in prison. I'd also check with UK based retailers as they can only sell what is legal there, as far as I know anyway.

Different strokes for different folks. I prefer a small fixed blade for most tasks daily (minus kitchen duties), although a smaller EDC is what I use to slice limes for drinks :) . I find a 3-3.5 inch blade to be optimal. Best knife is the one you have on you. A larger blade is more likely to be left at home.

There really is no "one size fits all."

They changed it to one size fits most. LOL

I haven't read the replies, just your post. But you have come to the right place.

Lots of designs can fill this role.

Very impractical, and obstrusive to carry, and certainly not something to use in public unless you want to attract negative attention.

Im looking for something thats strong and can take damage,

Strong means resists flexion, and I think you mean something that will not take damage if used hard. Probably you would be better served by a well balanced knife that has strength, and toughness, but no too much wear resistance. Hear me out. High edge retention is great, if you know how to sharpen, but you said you know basically nothing about knives. I suggest a tough steel with (relatively) lower wear resistance and good geometry, because it will be easier to sharpen, and that's a skill everyone should learn.

5 inches is a little on the big side for a "do everything" knife, in my opinion. I make a model called the Prevail and I have hoarded a couple blanks in 3/16" AEB-L, which as luck would have it is (at the time of this post) just about exactly at the price point you referred to, if you select the base model.

Here's one I made a few years ago, as an example of what I could do within your price range. It is large and tough enough that you could use it hard, with geometry that will make it cut and slice very well, even for its sturdy blade stock thickness, and comes with a basic black molded taco sheath. Shipping to the UK is a bit extra though, so it might come out slightly higher than your budget.

Thanks. That model is just one idea, I can make other styles as well, but there are many good makers on the forum to choose from, all with interesting and appealing styles their own, navman included. So like I said you definitely have come to the right place.
