I haven't read the replies, just your post. But you have come to the right place.
Im looking to get a knife of decent quality that I can use for multiple things from cutting an apple to doing something sturdy
Lots of designs can fill this role.
Im a really big fan of these knifes, because of the shape and the ring
however some people say its inpractical,
Very impractical, and obstrusive to carry, and certainly not something to use in public unless you want to attract negative attention.
Im looking for something thats strong and can take damage,
Strong means resists flexion, and I think you mean something that will
not take damage if used hard. Probably you would be better served by a well balanced knife that has strength, and toughness, but no too much wear resistance. Hear me out. High edge retention is great, if you know how to sharpen, but you said you know basically nothing about knives. I suggest a tough steel with (relatively) lower wear resistance and good geometry, because it will be easier to sharpen, and that's a skill everyone should learn.
not be tiny, an around 5 inch blade thats reliable and will last me a few years or a good amount of time, mostly made out of metal AND the made thing it being not a straight blade - I dont mean for it to look like a sickle just not straight (like the ones in the pics) + ideally under £150. any recommendations are much appriciated (sorry for the bad description)
5 inches is a little on the big side for a "do everything" knife, in my opinion. I make a model called the Prevail and I have hoarded a couple blanks in 3/16" AEB-L, which as luck would have it is (at the time of this post) just about exactly at the price point you referred to, if you select the base model.
Here's one I made a few years ago, as an example of what I could do within your price range. It is large and tough enough that you could use it hard, with geometry that will make it cut and slice very well, even for its sturdy blade stock thickness, and comes with a basic black molded taco sheath. Shipping to the UK is a bit extra though, so it might come out slightly higher than your budget.
