Looking for a knife...

The JYDII looks like a very nice knife, but that clip just completely kills it for me (would have enjoyed a thumb stud as well, but not a deal breaker). I don't have much in the way of tools or know how when it comes to this type of work, so I wouldn't be able to do much to mod the clip to be more practical and subtle. Kinda sad though, woulda been high up on the list had it not been for that darn clip (looks like a Batman gadget).

I've been carrying my JYDII for about a week now and hardly even notice it in my front left pocket

Seeing as I use public transportation quite oftem, I'm just very wary of much knife/clip showing. I check to make sure my shirt is fully pulled down to cover the visible parts at least once every couple of minutes. And honestly, it probably does seem a bit exaggerated in the pictures, but I still think it would be a massive clip :P But I'll definitely give it some more consideration from your endorsement :)

Don't do that, It can be considered a concealed weapon that way.

You would have all your needs met with a Spyderco Endura, Delica or Tenacious. If not those, go BM Griptillian or the new BM Presidio ultras

I just bought a Camillus Wildfire off of ebay for less than $20.00. Aus8, assisted opening, about 4 1/2" closed. The handle is black coated aluminum with I think G10 inserts. The knife is as well made as my Kershaw Scallion and it is inexpensive enough to use without worry. The knife is no longer made, but I have seen many of them still on ebay.

I've heard a bunch of different versions of this :\ The reason I now do this is because an acquaintance of mine who is studying criminal justice and works at a correctional facility said that having any sort of knife period (especially locking) would/could be considered a concealed weapon regardless. Someone just seeing the clip would be grounds enough for a LEO to check me and have things be down hill from there; so I figured making sure it was hidden from sight would be for the best... One of these days I'm going to have to call up my local PD and ask some questions.

I recommended the Kershaw Lahar earlier based on your requirements and, reading Jake's post, can also recommend the Tenacious and Endura4. I have both. The Endura has VG-10, almost 4" blade, reinforced tip, typical excellent Spyderco thumb jimping. It also has a slender handle with nested steel liners. The Tenacious is a shorter blade at about ~3 1/4" but in a full flat grind. It is a couple of steps below the VG-10 but the 8CR13MoV is a decent steel and meets your minimum requirements. The tip tapers to a fairly thin point so the tip strength may be less than the Endura and Lahar. It has excellent thumb jimping also and the G-10 handles are grippy and ergonomically shaped for a good grip. The linker lock bar is also jimped for additional grip in the finger groove. It rides fairly low in tip up or tip down. Not as low as my SOG Flash 2 but low enough to be inconspicuous. Plus, the high quality and high value of the Tenacious is its best feature. Speaking of features, it has nice phosphor bronze bushings that makes blade deployment very fast and smooth. Add to that the $30 price tag and you could get 2 or 3 of these. The Endura will cost ~$60.

I also have the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. It is a nice 'smaller' knife and rides pretty low in tip-up only. The black clip doesn't attract a lot of attention. My Mini-Grip is 154CM which is a step up from the Tenacious' 8CR13MoV. The Axis Lock is a solid lock and blade deployment is super fast.

If I read it right this should do it....

Hehe, actually have a few of the knives already mentioned: 551 Grip, Tenacious and RAM. Love them all, but they are just that, knives I already have - not a new one I can get :D I'm just using this as an excuse to purchase a new knife :) Also they each have some minor gripes and don't fit all the specs I was looking for:
*Grip is a bit on the thick side and doesn't quite have a super confident grip for tough pierces, also rides a bit higher than I'd like
*Tenacious' tip seems like it would be strong enough, but maybe not for alot of taxing pierces
*RAM again doesn't have that absolute 0 slip guarantee

But again, the biggest drawback about these knives is that I already have them ;)

I have the Lahar and think it would work out great. Great grip, rides better tip down, good steel, Good price($60).

The Kershaw Zing looks like it would work great but is less than half of your budget. Might also want to look at the Boker M-type and Hyper.

Here's another suggestion:

This knife is actually one I have been eying for some time now. It is the Boker CLB Direkt. The G-10 grip looks extra-secure with its 'sub-hilt' design. I do not know how it is in actual use but it looks promising. From the picture, it seems to have some aggressive jimping on the blade spine and the handle. It is 440C but I can't tell if it has a strong tip. Anyone that knows, please chime in.

O.o I thought the Direkt only came in CE, with the serrations being towards the tip end... Fellas, my list is getting pretty big :P

From the suggestions and what I had in mind, the short list has narrowed down to Delica, Endura, Lahar and JYDII Composite

Delica: No real knocks I can think of
Endura: Had a Cara Cara which is comparable, but it just seemed like too much blade.
JYDII: Insane clip (and a wee bit off for not having thumb deployment option).
Lahar: No real knocks here beyond still being a bit doubtful of the flipper deploying the blade with no wrist dependably. And just a random puzzlement as to why Kershaw which mainly puts out USA made blades had the Lahar made in Japan?

Surprised no one has mentioned the Kershaw G-10 Tyrade. I don't know how the OP feels about Speed-Safe and flipper only, but it works excellently on the Tyrade, plus you get the composite steel blade of 154CM/CPMD2 that is about the same length as the JYDII's, but thicker at .157" vs. .120". It also has those thick hardened steel liners of ~.080" that give it such excellent lockup. Clip is a little big, but not as big as on the original ti Tyrade, and not as large as the JYDII, plus the clip can be mounted for tip down or tip up carry. Give it a look as you might really like it!:D:thumbup:

The Lahar is made in Japan due to the Japanese made steel - VG-10. Same as my Endura 4. Seki City Japan - good stuff comes out of there  .

Oh I know it'd be quality, was just wondering why they would opt to have that one knife produced elsewhere when the majority of their knives are USA made is all :)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Kershaw's Blur. Fits all of your requirements, and if you check in the dealer section, kershawguy has a hell of a good deal on the S60V blems. At the price he is selling them for, you can't beat them!

The Lahar is perfect for your needs, too. After a few openings, it will loosen up and you don't need to move anything but your finger to get it to snap open and lock.

The Blur is indeed a very attractive knife, but it doesn't look like it has a very deep finger groove or well jimped thumb ramp to prevent the forward sliding :\

Bah, almost a week later and still unsure as what to go for. Was really looking into the ZT350 but was reluctant. It's a rather massive knife compared to must EDC folders. With such a wide and thick blade, is it still a good slicer? Also, can the AO be easily disabled, and if so does the knife open well without it?
