Looking for a large folder

Hi All,

I am looking for a large folder. SOG makes one with a 5" blade, but it has partial serrations. I am looking for somthing similar with no serrations.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

PS Couldn't find too much with the search.

Take a look, too, at the Cold Steel Voyager, in 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-inch blades, plain or serrated.

I own both a SOG Spec-Elite 2 and a four inch Cold Steel Voyager, and the SOG kicks the Voyager's tail in fit and finish. The SOG opens much smoother, and I'd bet the SOG's lock mechanism is stronger that the Voyager's. The SOG also has dual steel handle liners and a clip that can be positioned for either left or right side carry. The Voyager has no liners and the clip can only go in one position. I wouldn't trade my Spec-Elite 2 for anything Cold Steel makes. It's the only five inch folder that works. It honestly does not feel as large as it actually is, probably due to the dual handle liners that ballance the weight of the blade. The only thing that I slightly dislike about the SOG is the recurved blade. I'd never owned a recurve before the SOG and I thought it would be harder to sharpen than a straight edge, and it is slightly more difficult at first, but I've gotten to the point where I can sharpen the recurve as good as any of my other knives. The Spec-Elite 2 is the standard by which all other five inch folders should be judged, in my opinion.

Take a look, too, at the Cold Steel Yoyager, in 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-inch blades, plain or serrated.

Ditto on the Cold Steel folders. I had one with a 5 inch blade but found it less than comfortable in my jeans pocket. I much prefer the 4 inch blade I use now. Go to Cold Steel's website and take a look. If you do a Google search you can go to it easily.

There was the Camillus CUDA Maxx, the best 5.5" folder ever made! :D

Cold Steel does have a series of smaller folders with their ultralock, which is comparable to the SOG arc lock. But I agree with melt -- SOG beats out Cold Steel on all of these.

Benchmade Rukus or Skirmish. Rukus is bigger and has a nice straight flat ground blade.

Thanks for the replies.

The Spec Elite II is probably the closest thing to what I want (didn't even see it... duh).

I have some Cold Steel fixed blades and I really like them. Never handled one of their folders but, for some reason, they look really flimsey in the pictures...

However, this will be a working knife, so I may want to get something that I don't mind scratching up and really using.

Thanks again,

-Coop

I'd say get something from SOG. Their arc lock has never come loose at all for me. They are light weight and offer good steel. Also keep in mind that Cold Steel offers similar attributes. I don't like their marketing techniques but to each their own.

I carry the Cold Steel Gunsite tanto 5 in. and the Cold Steel Recon tanto 4 in blade when I'm on duty. But, off duty, I tend to carry the Recon more often as it fits better in the pocket.

Thanks again.

I've been carrying an older endura on and off duty. It's been great, but I'm looking for a change.

Any thoughts on either the CS rescue or the SOG flash rescue?

Thanks --Coop

They only look that way, Coop. I've found them to be dern near indestructable.
A gorilla couldn't break the Zytel handles. (I know, I've tried.;))

I also carry a 6-incher frequently.

My latest folder is the SOG Vulcan. I like it. Take a look at it. It has a 3.5" blade (I believe) with pocket clip. It is not an assisted opener, which are available from SOG as well. Overall, I have been very pleased with the SOG blades I own. They are pretty good in the cost-benefit department. The Vulcan is very fast and sharp.

I would suggest a full size rukus I edc both a full size and a mini. That full size rukus will do anything I need out of a knife. It is a very functional knife for the woods or anyplace else I might be, I regularly chop though 1.5" maple saplings with it like they were made of butter. The fit and finish on it is fantastic! mine has no play in the blade even after over a year of very hard use. I like it better then any other folder I've ever owned. The rukus has a 4.25" blade and is over 10" overall, I guess if it's too small for you I don't quite know what to say

The Manix is the only large folder I have ever needed. Do a search, it is a well respected knife in this community.

Did you consider the 0300 series from Kershaw (Zero Tolerance, actually) these are pretty hefty folders. Compare with the 1911-style pistol in the photo.
