Well...I carried a Microtech SOCOM in different variants for almost a dozen years. Shortly there after, I switched and decided to carry a Spyderco Military. I really like both knives, but I liked the fact that I had so many different types of steel to pick from on the "Sprint Runs" that Spyderco would sometimes do. Besides, I used to collect a lot of Microtech knives, and when I started to see them double in value...I simply kept them on display and didn't carry them. Yeah...I would take one out and play with it while watching a movie or something. Call me silly, but when I watch a movie I like to fiddle around with a knife or field strip one of my handguns. I'm strange like that. LOL

Anyway, back to my question. I have been taking some classes on how to properly use a Karambit for a while now...and I am very impressed with how effective this kind of knife can be when properly used. I mean...these things are no joke knives. No knife is a joke, but I think someone who knows how to properly use a Karambit is one dangerous SOB. And yes, I do carry a side arm and I normally wear about 3 blades on me. Both for weak and strong side hands...I've had someone try and take my side arm from me before. Only time I ever had to use a blade on another human. So...since that moment, I always had access to a blade with either hand.

The SOCOM I used to carry was about 4" as is the Spyderco Millie. They are both great knives...I really like the thin profile on the Millie....I do NOT like the newer SOCOM blades that MT has made. Well, there are times that I can not carry my side arm, and I can only carry a blade. I am happy with 4"...but I was wondering, is there a knife out there with similar traits to the SOCOM or Millie that is a bit larger? Perhaps in 5"-6"?? I don't pocket them...I wear my primary knife at 5'oclock. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

Espada comes to mind....check out some of the larger Cold Steels. Not sure any are going to compare to a MTech or Military though.

Extrema Ratio BF3 Dark Talon Folder
A. G. Russell Dozier Combat Folder
SOG Spec-Elite II

Obviously Cold Steel is probably the king of large folders

  • Fox Knives Tracker Meskwaki, 5.5" N690 blade.
  • Spyderco Tatanka, 5.1" VG-10 blade.
  • Extreme Ratio Resolza, 4.8" N690 blade.
  • Extrema Ratio RAO, 4.72" N690 blade.
  • Bastinelli Big Dragotac, 4.625" D2 blade.
  • Fox Knives Citadel Deimos, 4.5" N690 blade.
  • Spyderco K2, 4.5" CPM-10V blade.

cold steel megafolders with wave openning. Espada large or Rajah 2 (ask Charlie Mike).

Cold Steel XL models are impressive and the way I went. They're great value too. Was able to find the XL Recon 1 and XL Talwar, both XHP models, for just a bit over $100.

Cold Steel Ti Lite is a slim profile and comes in 6" blade. CS Counter Point XL too.

Cold Steel almost has a monopoly on the megafolder market, and certainly there is nobody else making them at working man prices. The Voyager, Rajah 2, Espada, Hold Out 1, Counter Point XL, Ti Lite, Recon 1 or Spartan would more than likely suit your needs.

If you're looking for a 5 inch or larger folder, Cold Steel should be your go to.

Espada XL is 7.5 inches.
Rajah 2, Hold Out 1, Counter Point XL, Ti-lite 6'' are 6 inches
Espada Large, Voyager XL series, Recon 1 XL series, and Talwar XL are all 5.5 inches
Spartan is 4.5 inches

Spartan, Espada, Rajah, Talwar, and Ti-lite all have a form of wave opening if that is of interest to you.

Protech Brend #1, Emerson super cqc 8, Lone Wolf Harsey T1 - all over 4", high quality knives
Bad blood makes some models >4" in lower quality steels, meyerco too.

Cold Steel Ti Lite is a slim profile and comes in 6" blade. CS Counter Point XL too.

The four or the six incher. They are both designed to deploy upon pulling from your pocket if you so desire.

I've been interested in a 5" folder just because the legal limit here is just over that. The Spyderco Tatanka looks the best to me, but I also was considering the Cold Steel Recon 1 XL because it is a lot lower priced.

Those blades look nice, but the handles are something I don't know if I can get used to. The handle is very important to me as is the size of the blade. The Spyderco K2 has a nice handle...but we are only talking about a .5" difference than my current EDC Millie. Cold Steel has some interesting BIG blades....but again, I really have to handle these blades in person before I can make a decision. The blade material is not what I would call first class...but as a defensive tool, I suppose they will do. What works best for me is the Microtech SOCOM and the Spydeco Military. Is there not something on the market with a similar profile but with a larger blade?? If not....I guess I will stick with the Military model from Spyderco...and the PM2 as a back up. Brous makes some nice blades, but again...a bit on the smaller side and I'm not a huge flipper fan.

you asked for 5" or so folders. Spyderco millie has a 4" blade and if you look at the cutting edge it is much shorter than 4", definitely shorter than zt0452 or bm710. The pm2 is noticeably shorter in both.

You can get the Ti Lite 6", Recon 1 XL, G10 Espada, and Hold Out 1 in CTS-XHP, which is at least as good as the S30V on the Military and better than the VG-10 of the Tatanka...
