Looking for a maker to help with a project

I have decided to make groomsmen/buddy gifts at my wedding to be small knives that I finish myself, and I need someone to supply the knives for this project.

I would need 8-10 blades, with blades of 2-3" and handles of at least 3". I prefer the looks of a flat grind, and I want them to be SHARP! Steel would be D-2, a good stainless or whatever the maker is accustomed to working with.
Trick is I need the cost to be under $30 a piece for these, and even less than that if possible, as I am on a strict budget.
Madpoet had agreed to this project, but unfortunately I never committed to it, and well...anyway, I'd love for you to get in tocuh with me so we can discuss some options. If you are a relatively new maker, that's fine, too, as these do not have to be "perfect" blades in every way and shape.
I am even playing with the idea of going with 1095 steel and doing a clay tempering on them to produce a hamon, but I don't know how feasible it would be. Cost would certainly be nice, though, as the steel would be cheap and there would be no heat treatment done by the maker!

I would be happy to help you out with this project. I would have answered your email earlier, but I was away attending a bachleor party.
I have to think about the price, but I think it'll work. Lets talk more about the details. Email me.

If you're still in the market, talk to Jens Ansø, he's been talking about getting into the unfinished market, and this might just be the kick he needs

Don't forget to pay your taxes...they eventually become my knives:)

This type of project is similar to one that I'd like to see more makers offer, at least ones who sell using knives, as it'd be nice to sample a maker's wares at an 'introductory price'. Semi-finished, no sheath, whatever it takes to get the price down low and yet not produce a loss for the maker. I guess the primary attributes of such a 'sample knife' would be the steel, heat treating and grind, and not worrying about cosmetics as that would be easy to see on the regular product.

Chiro,
You could also look at some of the supply houses such as K &G, Jantz, Texas Knifemaker's, etc. for their kit blades. If price is a factor, I believe that it would be very "do-able" to purchase the blades, use wood or "dymondwood" for scales well under your quoted price for materials, sheath included. Check it out. Texas Knifemaker's Supply catalog is downloadable.
If price or time is a factor, this may be a very viable option.

Just a thought......

A word of caution, I have not been impressed in the least with the quality of the blades that are offered by the retail outlets. I have personally received blades with ricasso's ground at different angles and hollow grinds ending at different places at the tip. I have also seen posts here and on other lists of blades soft enough to drill with normal high speed drill bits and other major defects. If the option is available to purchase semifinished blanks from a known maker, I would strongly recomend it over commercialy available kits/blades.

Hey Steve.
A.G. Russell has a small knife called a "Woodswalker." It is total length of 6" and sells for $9.95.
If you buy 6 or more in one order they are reduced to $8.95 each.
The catalog says they are made of High Carbon Stainless. You can get them with a hip pocket sheath for $19.95.
Just thought I would mention them to a buddy who is on a budget.I know how that is.

Thanks for all the hints/suggestions, guys. I am going with a guy who will make them from ATS-34 and heat treat them at Chris Reeve's shop. For the price it couldn't be beat. I would've liked to have a few made by each of you who replied, but that would be tough to work out with the details, so... it was a tough choice, but thanks!
