looking for a maker...

Hi all, I've posted here only a couple of times before... anyway, I'd be interested to find a knife maker to make me another large bowie in the 13" to 15" range(something similar to the one made for me by Wally Hayes, which I posted here a few months back) in a Musso-type style. I'd be looking more towards stock removal to keep the price down a bit, and was thinking along the lines of A-2 (with cryo-quench) 52100 or W-2 (if there is a maker who can get W-2 in form for stock removal use) for the blade. Handle material would be up to the maker, I'm not to picky about that (maybe some type of hardwood). Does anyone know of a maker with a little free time who could do something like this by late spring, to early-mid summer?

Thanks for your help in advance, you guys are the best.

Cheers, Ken

with that much time, i could probably do one in forged W2 and offer a wide selection of woods for the handle. I wouldn't want to try the brass parry strip at this point, however. What is your price range? I am a relatively new maker. so I still have self imposed sticker shock as far as pricing goes. Good thing I'm not trying to make a living at this:D

Knifemangler,

Just out of curiosity, what is a ABS Apprentice smith? I'm very interested in going to the ABS forging school in Old Washington Arkansas, but thought that the first step was as a Journeyman, after having passed the rigerous testing on personally made knives. Just wondering.

With the potential of forged Dubya-2, I can live without the Brass strip. Hey Joe, is there an e-mail address that I can talk with you? I think my range would be in the 1,000 to 1,200 U.S. range (I'm Canadian), though we can discuss this.

Cheers, Ken

Just to give you another name you might want to check out, Robert Blasingame make Musso style bowies.

Hell.....I'll make ya three of them for that higher figure...:D I did say that I had sticker shock as far as my pricing goes. LOL. With my tennis elbow, I will have to find someone with a press or power hammer so i can make the stock. For a blade that size, i would have to use 1 1/4 inch round bar or one of my big pieces of square bar stock. I have a couple of pieces that are 8 x 2 x 3/4 stock that would draw out nicely to 3/8 thick. I turned on my e-mail so you can send from here. I had no idea it was off....lol.

ummmm.....that means newbie......lol. It is an actual classification, but it just means that you are a knifemaker that hasen't taken the test for JS. Better than being called a schlub for 2-3 years plus.....lol. The school knocks a year off the time you have to be a member of the ABS before you can take the perforance test and present your knives for JS. Go if you are able. I just haven't had the time, but I would love to go in December when Jerry Fisk is teaching even though it won't save me any time. I will be eligible for the JS test at Blade '08 whether I go or not.
