I always wanted to try one of those ringcasters !! Got a link to where I buy one ??

They are also called Cuban Reels.

I will have a bunch more up for sale soon... A different tube though.

Sorry.... I don't have a link where you might conveniently buy a ringcaster like the one in my picture. The best ones I have I bought in Australia when I was over there some years ago. There are some for sale in tackle shops here in New Zealand from time to time.

They come in different sizes. I'd probably pick a smaller one than the one shown in my picture if I was only going to be chasing smaller fish with light line. Heavier line can be more 'springy' and might be best wound on to a bigger reel.

Australian web sites that sell fishing and outdoor gear might be a good place to look.

Best wishes... Coote.

I dont have a packable rod and reel, but if I went shopping for one , I wouldnt purchase anything without first looking at shimano. They make good stuff.

I see two "themes" coming out of this thread- a survival fishing kit which by necessity is on the small side and rather spartan or a pack rod/small reel- they fill two different niches IMO

a quality pack rod/reel will still be rather compact and if you do your homework under a lb for the whole kit- not a survival kit, but if actual fishing fishing is on your agenda, tough to beat

Also - I find my kit is best for bobber fishing - it is tough to make it jig for long periods of time - due to the amount of winding involved.

For my needs - it is perfect. I want a small BOB or I won't carry it. I would rather have something than nothing.

I had a bit of a browse around the net to see if I could find an online supplier of the plastic ring caster reels I showed a picture of.

I didn't find many. I think folks may call them by names that I'm not aware of right now.

However I did find some called Mako Handcasters. I also found them by entering 'hand casters'. Here is a link to a NZ supplier. I kinda like the look of the little 100mm one with a price of less than NZ$2

I stand by my reccomendation for the st. croix triumph 4 piece

TRS56ULF4 5'6" UL Fast 4 2 - 6 1/32 - 3/16 2.7 1 $ 80
TRS60LF4 6' L Fast 4 4 - 8 1/16 - 5/16 3.5 2 $ 90
TRS66MLF4 6'6" ML Fast 4 4 - 10 1/8 - 1/2 4.7 4 $ 100
TRS66MF4 6'6" M Fast 4 6 - 12 1/4 - 5/8 4.9 4 $ 100

If you just have pan fish the 5'6" ultra light in four pieces would barely be noticable. Figure most heavy is the 6'6" model and it only weighs 4.9 oz total.

I mean, this is really a no brainer!!! Add in a shimano sedona or sahara and you've got a banging setup that will weigh at most 14oz with all gear and line needed to have a really fun day. All that for a cost less than $200. Take a few trips and you've added extra excitement and taste to a rather mundane hike, I think that pays for itself.

Talfuchre's set up is nice... but seriously, when the hell would you want to use anything like that??? If you're going hiking, and there are streams around... Why not bring a small pack rod anyways??? I would rather eat fish than an f'ing MRE or what not. I seriously do not understand why there is even a question in your mind about this.

Tuxdad are you referring to the round reel on the left?

If so, we just call them hand line reels. If you search that you'll get better results. I've never heard them called a ringcaster over here.

If you like I can give you a few tips on how to use one.

Father in law just pulled this out of a cupboard when I said 'aww cool! Pen fishing rod!'.

I definitely welcome the tips and will do a search for a hand line reel...

Thanks very much !!

Tuxdad - i did a search and the net isn't very helpful in this area. Here's a link to start and I'll put together my own tutorial ... donno about the pics tho

http://www.fishsa.com/cstngrv1.php

Basically you hold the reel in the non casting hand, pointing it in the direction of your cast. Swing the hook/sinker around your head like a bullroarer and release when its heading in the direction you want. I swing it at about 45 degrees to the horizon. More sinker weight ... more distance.

I'm with Warden, the survival tubes some of you guys posted are absolutely AWESOME! Perfect for an emergency. I have an Eagle Claw pack spin/fly rod that does neither exceptionally well, but both sufficiently well enough to make it worth packing.

Two years ago, my family and my brother's were in the BWCAW and lost all poles (but my pack rod) in a canoe flip. Here are two of the eight poles we made from 8' maple saplings and some extra line we hand handy. They were perfect for jigging, drifting, and bobber fishing and we MURDERED the Walleye with them.

Silas - what is that tube - it is awesome!

Lokiman,

It is totally made for a smaller BOB - nothing I would use on a regular basis. Well actually I do - but that is just when hiking and bored.

Heck, I use my kids Shakespeare Spiderman rod a LOT when we camp - love that little thing.

I really like all of these ideas for fishing kids ... Most of my BOB kits are pretty bare bones..

I just use a plastic water bottle as a reel(a good 30 wraps around a bottle works perfect for me).. I'v caught a bunch of fish with my son when he'd have a rod and reel and not cach any..

Thanks for all the info folks.. I'm thinking for him, maybe a travel rod.. He's not the most gentle person with gear of any kind...
