Like in the title, I'm looking for something more modern that I can edc.

I have a price range of 30-50 bucks, 60 at the most.

I want to use it mostly for light stuff like opening boxes, etc
but I also want to be able to use it for
- cardboard
- plastic (bubble wrap, plastic bags)

Requirements:
- Blade around 3" or under
- Folding (Don't tell me to get a fixed one, just don't.)
- easy to open and close, but won't suddenly snap open in my pocket and stab me, since I like to keep my knives shaving sharp.
- slim profile, not beefy (easy carry with jeans)
- I prefer a black colored handle (but I think this shouldn't be a problem, as there is no
- locked

Any reccomendations?

Thanks!

$65 will get a Benchmade 556 Mini Griptillian. Its the perfect small-medium EDC.

If you can bear the extra I agree that the Mini Grip is a great option and will last you. The Spyderco Delica 4 is a great choice to and will cost about the same as a mini-Grip. On the Lower end of price but still great quality lies the Kerhsaw Scallion and almost any small-medium kershaw under $50. For the tasks you described the mini griptillian would be my pick.

Kershaw Leek, comes in an all black version (1660ckt). Assisted opening with a safety lock so no inadvertent deployment. Slim, very pocket friendly design. I use mine daily for the same things you have the need for.

Where are you guys getting your knives from? I looked up the mini grip on amazon/rei/bladehq, and they were all around 85 bucks.

GP knives has the best price on Benchmades. Also, be careful who you mention. There is a list of sellers you can mention

Kershaw Leek hands down winner here. As was mentioned previously by cutty73 the black color is available. So kinda repeating what he said but, Stays sharp made in the usa so kershaw has a lifetime warranty on it. It is a very thin profile fits in any pocket easily. Still one on my favorites to this day highly recommend

I've been looking at these:

Benchmade 556 Mini-Griptilian
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw Skyline

My problem with the mini grip is that I cannot find the mini grip for anything under 70$, so it's out of my price range.

After looking at the two kershaws, I have some concerns about the locking mechanisms,

namely that the locking has to do with the thumb stud going behind a little groove? To me that seems a little janky...

any input on this would be appreciated.

The Leek and Skyline use a frame lock and liner lock respectively. The thumb studs are really blade stops, although you might be able to use them as an opening mechanism too. The Leek and Skyline are really meant to be flippers. The locks are plenty strong for an EDC folding knife.

I bought a 556 for $67 shipped from GPknives. The blade steel and locking mechanism are far superior to the Kershaws you listed. Isn't it worth a few extra dollars for something you're going to use and carry every day?

The Skyline would probably be my recommendation out of those listed so far (within your budget). It has quickly become one of my favorite light EDC blades, very slim profile and easy carry. The liner lock is very strong - holds up to a surprising amount of abuse.

Ok, I think I'll pick up a mini grip.

does anybody have opinions on serrated vs non serrated, and clip carrying?

I dont exactly understand the difference between tip up/tip down, is it just personal preference?

Find a Kershaw you like at a price you're comfortable with, and love it until you move up to a custom
