Looking for a new ax, Christmas money burning a hole!

OK, I went to SMKW today and they had everything in the store on sale. Almost all the Gransfords were sold out, The one Wetterlings I was interested in was sold out, and They only had one Council tool HB there. The quality on the council was absolutely horrible. The head looked like it was ground on with an angle grinder, the pole was not square, and in the top of the handle where the wedge goes, there was one of those steel tubes to lock in the wedge. This tube was put in off center and started a split in the wood. I was not impressed. Guess I'll just wait and get a Gransfords SFA at another time.

Interesting, I saw a pile of Wetterlings hatchets a few years back that looked like apes had assembled them. Seems that Q.C. at Wetterlings has improved since then.

Every Wetterlings I've looked at so far has been excellent. At this point I feel very lucky to have a place close by to look at all these axes. If I'd ordered the Council and got what I saw two days ago, I would have been pissed. Theirs no way I would buy a ax now sight unseen.

The Plumb Butterfly's are very well made and are real choppers. The Wetterlings and Huskvarna 16 inch axes are quite good, very hard steel made for cutting pine and spruce or "soft" woods. I intend to find a 16 inch Husky soon to give it a go in the woods.
A friend has a Wetterlings and he swears it is the best axe he's ever owned. I have several Plumb Butterfly axes and I like them. I own a few Snow & Neeley Hudson bays, they look good but are not very efficient. All the Hudson bays look good but are lacking in real cutting power imho.

I totally agree. If you can see and handle the axe this is best. I really believe you will do good with a Wetterlings. Luck

I have an idea you are referring to S---y M------n. I stopped in their store several years ago and Wetterlings were selling for $35.00. They had three 16" at the time. I didn't buy them, all I can do is shake my head today. Lol
