You REALLY owe it to yourself to ALSO get an Ontario 12" machete & modify it the way you want, in addition to what ever knife you choose. IMHO, it is fun to use it as a guide for all your other choppers. Mine now chops better than you could possibly imagine. I did in fact, out chop-or at least equaled, someone who had a $300 chopper. He was not too happy that i only paid $21 for it & had a blast modifying it.
My modified Ontario SP-8.
Ontario SP-51 & SP-53. I like the SP-53 better for chopping & wood processing. The SP-51 better for any type of kitchen duty/wood processing.
Cold Steel Trail Master.
Ontario SP-KUKRI.
7", 8", & 9" Dexter-Russell 1/4" thick Heavy Duty Cleavers.
But i think you are selling yourself short by ONLY going with 1/4" thick. MANY other GREAT options in 3/16" thick & i have not broke one yet.
Condor Boomslang in 3/16". After I thinned the blade :thumbup: .
KaBar #1249 Kukri machete :thumbup:, KaBar #1248 Cutlas machete :thumbup:, KaBar #1279 Grass machete :thumbup:.
Condor Lochnessmuk (top) & Pack Golok Knife. After i thinned the blades :thumbup:.
BigHoss was dead accurate in his description:
There several more offerings from Ontario like the SP50 and the RD9 but I hear they don't chop as well as the BK9. Condor has some cool stuff too but they tend to ship with a very thick edge. Expect to spend some time with a belt sander thinning it out.
 Condor is working on their QC issues but blade grind is a personal preference/what are you doing with it, specific kinda thing. Different grinds for different chores. Thin for vegetation, wide & thick for chopping wood.
Hopes this helps you out some.
