Looking for a new EDC

Hi there

I Recently lost my Benchmade 10750 (vex) and I'm looking for a new blade.
What I would like:
- Tip-up carry. The 10750 doesn't have this, and it's something that would be preferable, and a deep pocket clip wouldn't be a bad thing either
- Slightly smaller. The 10750 has a 3.29" blade, I'm looking for something in the ~3" or slightly smaller range. Lighter wouldn't be bad, either
- Not a liner lock. I've never really liked these, and would prefer something else such as axis lock, or frame lock. Not a big fan of lock-back either, since I like being able to close knives one-handed
- Plain edge. I have no use for combo edge, and would prefer plain edge
- thumb stud for opening. I really prefer thumbstuds to thumb holes for fast and consistant deployment

I've looked all around, and these seem to be the key, in that they're the right size, axis lock, and plain edge:
Benchmade Mini Barrage (585)
Benchmade Mini Griptilian (556) (I really like the cabelas D2 version)
Benchmade Mini Presidio ultra (527)

I'm also open to other suggestions. I'm looking to spend about $100. Less is better.

Thanks for your time

Im not a fan of the smaller knife but I do love my mini barrage which feels bigger in hand than it really is. Just too bad you don't like the liner locks, lots of great affordable options in that category.

John, the Spyderco Stretch frn is a light weight ergonomic 3.5" cutting machine:D Re one handed closing, with lock back, on the stretch, push down on the release and the blade wont bite you. As the choil will be what hits the finger, even easier than a liner lock.

Oh darn I didn't read close enough, you wanted under 3" the Spyderco Sage is a fine piece, but its 3"

Id give the spyderco paramilitary a try. It is easy to close one handed, around a 3 inch blade and very lightweight. I think you would be very happy with this guy:thumbup:

I second that :p

Just finished writing a lengthy reply in another thread about this knife but have you considered the SOG Flash 1? I've seen a ton of videos on youtube about how great it is (namely nutnfancy) and resisted buying it because I'm not a fan of SOG... long story short, I finally decided I had to give it a short.

It meets all your criteria:

tip up carry with a very deep pocket clip (big selling point for me)
2.5" blade
Not a liner lock, it uses something similar to the axis lock
Plain edge
Thumb stud for opening
WELL below your $100 range. I found mine for ~$33 shipped.

Just as a disclaimer: I don't have mine yet but I'm the type of guy that thoroughly researches products before buying them so I don't think I'll be disappointed unless their is blade play in mine (which is the chief complaint I've read about).

Check out BM 14210 or 707 Sequel.
Sequel is my favorite small axis bm.
Thanks for the suggestion, the 707 sure looks like it could do what I need
G-10 delica

Thanks, but does spyderco make one with a thumb stud instead of a thumb hole?

Completely forgot about this one, I might just have to pick one up in addition to any other knife I buy

Hi John, welcome to BF

Boker Trance/Hyper

Kershaw Mini Mojo <- i think the earlier ones were 440a steel, the later ones Sandvik 13c26, I'd get a latter one

Hard to go wrong with a BM Mini Grip tho. I don't have a d2 blade, but several 154 blades and they are fantastic.

How does the D2 on the cabelas exclusive mini-grip hold an edge compared to the 154cm found on the regular mini-grip ?

Well get ready, "no blade play" means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. IMO sog fit and finish is bad. Not terrible, but bad enough that I gave mine away.

OP if you can get over liner locks I would suggest an emerson mini cqc-7. Or a cqc-14. There is also the lone wolf blackfoot. And the Al Mar mini SERE is perfect to your descirption beyond it's lock (and it's one hell of a liner lock). I will also second the paramilitary, it's a great knife.

Personally though if I was going to buy a knife UNDER 100 dollars and NOT a liner lock, I would buy a CRKT ripple.

Does anyone who owns a coated benchmade knife (such as the cabelas mini-grip d2) have anything to say about the durability ? I don't want it to be all scratched up rather quickly.

Right now I've decided between either that or the emerson mini-commander. tough choice.

The Barrage, if you like a great AO that opens fast and locks up strong.

I pinched my finger on that the first time opening it, since I had my index finger where it was normally on a flipper AO. Something to get used to which may be fine depending on the other knives you carry.

.

IME, this one has too many points of failure. The first one I got had the flipper lock break right away, and the replacement one eventually had the AO break completely. Stud lock was really nice, but it's not reliable. The pocket clip also tore up my pockets, it's way too tight.

Well I only own a Mini-Grip of the ones you listed, but so far I am very happy with it. I love the axis lock, and the knife is butter smooth. Blade is under 3" which helps with legality in a lot of places, and its pretty good steel. Mine has no blade play, and has replaced my scallion as my light edc of choice. Hope this helps.
