I'm in the market for a new everyday working folder.I've been saving up for a while and am willing to pay more than I have in the past.I really like the thought of the Chris Reeve sebenza.Any other ideas would help me out. Thanks alot!

There are lots of excellent folders and I haven't used them all but none of the others I've bought so far (based on reviews from this forum) are nearly as good as the Sebenza. Chris Reeve says he'd personally choose the Umnumzaan over the Sebenza. Don't have one to make the comparison but the U evolved from lessons learnt with the S so it should be better - if you can find one!

With either, you invest in a total care package - not just a knife.

Why pay so much? Spyderco Military, para military, Endura, Delica, Any Benchmade in 154CM, D2, or S30V are lots of choices you should look at that are top notch knives that Will do anything those big money knives will.

I prefer the alias to the sebbie.. By far.. That includes the cutting and slicing ability. But if the sebbie does work for you.. Its an amazing knife.. Just not for me..
Other's to try.. Mini skirmish, Burke Rockstar.... SNG.....
Para mili
Mili
ATR
HK BM 14205
ZT MUDD

Thanks
Matt

I agree. If you have your heart set on a CRK then by all means don't give it a second thought, they are amazing and functional works of art. But if you are looking for a work knife then I would recommend something from Spyderco, Benchmade or Kershaw. Personally I've found that my knife see a lot more action when I'm not worried about scratching, marring, mutilating or losing them :p However, that is a personal preference. some people have no qualms about using the hell out of their CRK knives, and they are made to take everything you can throw at them, but I do things with my knives I would never do to a CRK based on price alone. If I ever buy a CRK it will be a safe queen, why bang up such a nice knife? That's why my Endura is for.

I could have 6-7 Sebbies if I sold my Spydercos alone but don't have a Sebbie yet. I expect I will someday in the near term future.

I just think the Military is such a great EDC. I can't imagine the Military not being in the top 10 or 20 list of best overall production folders today. For a good amount less than $200 you can have a CF S90V but the G10 S30V standard issue is one friggin heck of a knife and you're then only looking at $130 give or take a few bucks. I'm proud to own 4 Militarys of various flavors.

I know how personal knives can be. That's why I own over 50 knives now, all very nice to super duper production knives. I can and do carry many of those knives regularly. And at the end of the year, a Military is carried more than any other model. They're that good of a large EDC. Period. Slim, almost weightless relative to what you get and stong enough to be called a solid medium duty EDC. The blade is useful for many things except for prying I would think. The fine tip combined with the well jimped choil and thumb ramp make the Military a mulit-tasker with super fine detail ability.

I would say to get the Sebenza if that is what you have been saving for. I would also recommend a Microtech Socom, they are excellent knives and are either auto or manual with a very thick liner lock. The newer versions have D-2 and I believe I've seen S90V as well for about $250-$300 new.

Good luck shopping, J.

I would urge you to take a look at Kershaws line of ZT folders. The ZT0300 series is the flagship. There is a smaller version called the ZT0350 coming out at the end of March or first of April that will be a hot seller.

If you want a Sebenza, then by all means GET a Sebenza. Nothin else will really do until you get one.

There's a lot to consider.
What blade shape do you like? What steel or metal?
What type of lock.
What handle material do you like, etc.
Take your time.

if you like the titanium frame lock then the BM mini skirmish is a cheap alternative to the sebbie. the mini skirmish is about the size of the full sebbie also. if you are looking for something light you might want to check out a socom elite though

I love my Sebenza, but- just because the Sebenza is a great knife does not mean it is the only good knife. I am sure most others can recommend other great options but the Kershaw Shallot has become a recent favorite with me, and I have a soft spot for Spydercos of any kind.

Well as said before if you want a Sebenza and you have saved up for it, pull the trigger and get one.

If you like it... Problem solved you have a new folder.

If you get it and do not like it... There will likely be others that will buy it from you for close to original price in the trade forms. So net cost of owning one that you do not like should be low and you will have the money for another knife to try.

As far as using a CRK. There is an interview with Chris Reeves posted in the CRK section of BF. In it Chris basically says, that if a customer ships him a used (and sometimes abused) knife he will make it "new". He admits that his knives come at a premium, but you get a "service" not just a knife. Not many manufactures will give you service. They will fix a problem, but they will not refurbish a used product.

Just some thoughts,
STICF

^^ What he said and you can get replacement parts at any given time. Even if for some wierd reason you destroy one of the handle scales, you can just order another one for about $100. Cheaper than having to buy another one new :)

The sebbie is an excellent knife in it's own right, but it does make for a nice "customizing" platform. Right now you can find different backspacers that include inpact weapons and window punches, you can find G-10 handle slabs to make it look striderish, etc...

Good luck shopping, J.
