Hey all,
I , as the tread states, am looking to buy a friction folder. I have made several for clients, friends & myself & I currently have a higonokami style knife on its way through the mail hat was given to me by a friend, but i thought it was high time to buy a friction folder.

Anyone have any suggestions on what i should purchase??

A Svörd Peasant would also be my first choice - also one of the sardian knives Fausto shows are just great. Maybe you could grab a Trattenbacher Taschenfeitel... or just remove the locking ring of an Opinel.

There are several choices out there...

I thought a higonokami is a friction folder?

Why not? I think the wood is more aesthetically pleasing but the plastic handle ones work great and they are incredibly light.

Too flexible and they feel so cheap. I thought I would like them, but they just feel so cheap. They have aluminum and wood... that works for me. I plan on making some handles to replace the orange poly on mine.

Mine has always felt pretty solid to me. I'll eventually get a wood one as well just because I prefer natural materials, but the one I have has become my favorite work knife.

You would think with all the sheep in that country they would have a horn handle version.

Edit: Looks like they did a limited run in Buffalo horn

Wood Svord peasant knife woold be a good cheap option to start with, you can customize the wood handle if you so desire. Michael Morris custom is a more upscale and affordable way to go, I have one on order and can't wait to open beer with that bottle opener option:D

A few to check out . Deviant Blades

Another vote for a Svord Peasant Mini. I carry one for work everyday where it sees constant use. Rides completely unnoticeable in the pocket, one handed opening, and the lanyard hole in the blade tang makes for quick retrieval. Can be broken down and cleaned in the blink of an eye. I originally bought one in wenge wood, but the scales on mine were pretty rickety feeling and needed to be re-tightened all the time. No problems with the plastic handles.

Filip De Coene makes exceptional friction folders....

I find the knives from Taramundi in Spain very appealing!

As well as the various Sardinian models.

Call me weird but...
I was raised with friction folders, and I love them. And I still see no point in the extended tang.
European traditional friction folders (such as Opinel's, taramundi's, and Sardinian knives of course) don't have that, and they work just as fine, being way less obtrusive. My two cents though

After carrying an using the Pattadese for a couple of months now, I have to agree. The Svord appeals to me, but that long tang is just so awkward looking and makes pocket cary a hard thing to do. All the years I've carried Opinel's, and used them like a friction folder, I never needed a long tang for any reason. Now if the tang is made for a particular use, like Michael Morris's friction folder being a bottle opener, I maybe could see it. Or even better, a flat/Phillip's screw driver would be cool. But just sticking out there is a turn off. The makers of friction folders need to study the knives of Sardinia and Northern Spain more.

Carl.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone, very helpful

Its not weird at all, I carry 2 folders, 1 with a larger blade & 1 with a smaller blade. My smaller one is either a friction folder or slip joint, i use this more than my larger knife for quick tasks

The "call me weird" thing was actually due to my opinion on extended tangs on these knives.
If I'm weird for liking friction folders, then I'm in good company (especially in western Europe) :p
