Looking for a new handgun.

A lot of nice handguns available. But you can't go wrong with a Glock for what you're looking. I have a Glock 27 and swear by it. Here's a picture (along my my Sig).

Light, reasonably powerful, and simple? Glock 19 all the way. If the Glock grip is too big for the mrs. I would suggest the steel framed Kahr. Its heavier than the plastic, but if your wife isn't a gun person the plastic Kahr can be a bit snappy with full power loads. Also, now that standard capacity mags are available for it, you might want to look at the Smith and Wesson/Walther p99. The grip is interchangeable for different hand sizes. I'm not normally a big fan of Smith autos, but I really liked the p99 I shot recently. Not a match trigger, but no worse than Glock.

i would get either a glock 19 or 26 in 9MM, a 23 or 27 in .40 S&W, or a kahr PM9 or P9 and of those i would probably get the kahr P9 myself, i have a P9 and a PM9, they are excellent pistols imho, the PM9 is almost too small for me but my wife loves it and carries it daily, the glocks are excellent too albeit a bit thicker (too thick for my wifes hands FWIW). i also have a P220 SIG .45 and a P225 9MM, excellent too albeit too large for daily carry imho, the kahr PM9 holds 1 less round IIRC than the P225 and is much much smaller and easier to carry.

if ya are looking for a smaller pistol than a 1911 a taurus/barretta 92 is the last thing ya want, wayy too big (yes i have one of those too)

i would certainly stick with kahr, SIG or glock unless ya want a 1911, they are head and shoulders above S&W/barretta/Star/steyr/etc imho

If you want give me a shout. You can try some of the 9mm's that I have, before you make your decision. Just don't drop them, like you dropped your TV. :D

I wouldn't recommend a S&W model 99. I don't know the details, but that gun was approved, then rejected by the NJ State Police, who ended up purchasing Sig's. If SOG made a handgun, I would stay away from that too. Get a Sig 220, 229, Glock (Soulless Reliability), or CZ, in any of the following calibers, .357, .40 or .45. Oh yeah, "knockdown power", HaHaHaHaHa !!!! RFK was shot four times with a .22.

Unless your wife enjoys going to the shooting range to stay proficient, do yourself a favor and check out the Ruger SP101. Point it and pull the trigger. Loaded with either Federal 125 gr or 110 gr, it will stop any 2 legged critter.

I know this violates a couple of your rules, but it eliminates many of the stresses that turn fine motor skills off, and only requires gross motor skills, which is what we all need in a panic situation.

I third the CZ P-01. My dad got one a while back for similar reasons, in part because he was so fond of my 75B. The 75B is fairly big, but the P-01 is considerably more compact while remaining just as acurate and reliable. great shooting little gun, mom groups well with it too. OT, but if you have the money, you might want to invest in one of the new Walther .22s as a range gun, great trainer, and your spouse might enjoy working with it more than a 9mm. Lot cheaper to shoot as well.

A lot of these guns have a barrel conversion available so you can shoot both .22 and 9mm (or whatever) out of the same gun.
The CZ is a famous example, but I've seen ads for someone selling custom .22 barrels for lots of different handguns. If I ever get a proper SD gun I'll want a .22 barrel for it.

Three (at least) options:
Spribgfield XD
Kahr K or P series
Glock

All have 9mms
All have a variety of sizes
All have proven track records
All have their own sets of issues

I have owned both the Kahr and the XD and currently EDC the XD subcompact 9mm. Great shooter and very reliable. Quite reasonably proced (I know that was not one of your requirements, but never hurts.) MANY options for the Glocks and mods available. Kahrs are the slimmest thing out there...shoot like a dream.

Good luck and let your wife get her hands on them to see what she likes.

My vote goes to Sig. Glocks are great guns, but I prefer the Sig everytime. I would suggest stepping up from a 9mm to a .40. The recoil is not much more than a 9mm, but it has better knock down.
My friend and I go to the range and try to see who can shoot the tightest 5-shot group. He hates it when I bring the Sig out.
I am in no way knocking a Glock. I have a CCW and carry a Glock 27 quite a bit of the time. Sigs are great to shoot, but harder to conceal.

I recently purchased a Springfield XD in .40 S&W.

What a great gun!

I also own a Glock 27, which I had rebuilt after beating the hell out of it by EDC ing it in an ankle holster. Also a great gun.

I also own a Taurus PT-111 (9MM) that I carried in the ankle holster while my Glock was having surgery. It is lightweight, solid, and inexpensive. It also shoots very good, and would fit average hands quite well.

The best thing for you and your wife to do is to go down to the local gunshop, and actually hold a few different handguns, so you get the feel of them. Then you'll know what fits before you actually purchase.

The wife and I are heading to the gun shop this weekend. I'll let you know how we make out.

Uh, that's a little more information than we need. How about you just tell us what gun you get. ;)

Smart ass. ;)

If a carry gun is what you're looking for, the Sig 239 is it. Put some $20 Hogues on her, and it's like a glove. Hell, quite a few glocktalk.com even concede that one.

It is single stack, and available in 9mm, .40, and .357 Sig.

It's also not just my carry gun. It's replaced my do anything gun. You owe it to yourself to have the best, and the 239 is it.

You hit the nail on the head about the Hogues!!!!!

K.V... I know you said the 1911 style was out due to you want your wife to be able to use it, too... well, there's alot of guys liking the Glock, especially the compact versions... and I do own a couple... but... I think you'll find the biggest complaint small handed shooters face is the width of the grip - especially anything over .380 that comes double-stacked...like the Glocks, Sigs (not all) and others...

We have a female firearms instructor out here in Seattle that is @5'5", and all of a 130lbs soaking wet... she's petite... and she pack's a 1911... She also advocates women learn how to shoot a 1911 because of it's inherent ergonomic characteristics and reliability... and, for small hands, the single stack ends up allowing for the most optimum grip on a small handed person... especially if you put a flat mainspring housing on it...(I know, I wouldn't have thought so... until I watched her!)

I shoot with a small informal group of fellow legal industry folks...mostly staff level. Several of them are female and have smaller hands. One even brought her two daughters, aged between 11 and 14 years - both of those young girls took to my 1911 faster than anyone I've shot with... When the youngest one centered her first three shots at 25', you could have lit the whole city with that smile!

So, don't rule out the 1911 style totally... try it...she may like it!!!

Otherwise - I'd advocate GLOCK!!!!!! :D
