Hi,

I don't think you can get more traditional than a Case Stockman. Though I've just started to carry a mini-trapper. And I like the pattern. You might look at the Case Tiny Trapper too.

A two-blade Jack is very traditional.

A yeller handle Case Med Stockman, CV steel:thumbup:
and you'll probably have enough left over to get him or you a Case Yeller Soddie Jr in CV:D why buy just one when you can buy two:D
I really couldnt be happier with the Yeller CV's Ive had either my soddie or my stockman in my pocket everyday since spring, excellent edge holding and as ya use them they will patina which just makes them all the more interesting
Ya might also check out Queen (S&M, Canal ST., etc)
good luck

Or if he'd like something a little larger, check out this Case Copperhead from the William Russell Case series. Handles are chestnut jigged bone. It's about 4 inches closed (nearly as big as a Trapper) but has the smaller pen blade like a Jack. I just picked one up and really like it. Around $43.

My vote would be a Case trapper. Full size, mini, tiny, which ever size he prefers. I don't think they get much more useful or traditional than the trapper. The only bill they won't really fill is the strong backspring. If a stiff backspring is what you are looking for, a soddie is it. That is not to say that the backsprings on any of the four Case trappers I have are weak, but they are not as stout as those found on my sod busters.

Can you get a wee bit more specific? What type of pattern/s does he like? What does he carry now - or did he carry? What sort of guy is he - more of an outdoorsman, or more of a read a good book kind of guy?

I like a peanut and I like a trapper, but they're VERY different knives and not for everyone.

I would start with steel, does he like carbon which is easy to sharpen and keep sharp and gets a patina over time, or does he prefer the easier maintenance of stainless, which tends to stay shiny over time but is harder to sharpen?

What size would he prefer to carry, a larger, heavier "workingman's knife", a diminutive gent's knife, or something in between? Older guys tend to appreciate lighter knives, but my Grandpa carried a 4" Stockman into his late 70s, so it's not a dyed-in-the-wool rule.

If you can help us narrow some parameters, we can suggest appropriate patterns.

pimp,

I would like to ask you a few more details about what Gramps is intending to do with it.

I mean how about a little history on what he is used to edc'n?.
And does he still work, if so what occupation?.
Does he hunt?.
Does he fish?.
Go camping?

I think then we would be able to fine tune our suggestions to give proper advice and to narrow it down a bit.

Anthony

EDIT TO ADD: mnblade, my appologies to you!. You covered the ground I did. My bad, as I missed that post until now.

I'd suggest a CASE Slimline Trapper or similar.

Slim, long blade, choice of steels and very ergonomic, well old school too!

Easier to sharpen a long blade in my experience.

I really like the slimline barehead trapper. I love it so much, I just got myself a spare for in case I lose my original one.

Well since he has carried an Old Timer I would suggest an Old Timer:D Probably has the 8OT senior stockman 3 7/8" closed Or the medium 34OT right at 3 1/4 closed And as A SCHRADEAHOLIC I know for sure they are IMO the "best":D really though They can be had from that "auction" site just make sure you get the USA made models!:cool::D

Hello pimp,

Thanks for the additional information on Gramps. Like stroker says a USA made Schrade Old Timer or Uncle Henry might fit the bill..

But consider the following. A Case stockman in CV hi-carbon steel and Amber Bone scales..

Or one of my favorites. Same stockman model by Case in Bone-Stag scales and Tru-Sharp stainless steel. A very, very low maintenance steel but with good edge holding ability..

I've never got to handle one of these, but they are on the inside cover of the latest Blade magazine. It looks like a great knife.

I would have to also suggest a large or medium Case Stockman. Preferably CV.
