Looking for a new watch

Snow,
If your mom thinks the Invicta is high, show her Omega and Rolex. :D
I have an 8926. Nice watch for the money, very nice.

One last question for everyone, and that would be to ask where I can get the Invicta and a NATO strap for a good price from a reputable dealer.

Again, thanks for the help, everyone!

Snow

Westcoast Time seems to have a good reputation and has Nato and Rhino bands. Not really sure of a good place for the Invicta though, maybe someone else can suggest a good place for those.

I stumbled across Invictas4less last night and really liked what I saw, but I wanted to hear from someone on BF that it was a good site. Hopefully some time soon I will be posting pics of my new 8926 with NATO strap. Thanks guys.

Most of the guys on the watch boards don't like the Invictas... there are issues with the brightness of the luminous paint, there's fit and finish issues... but then, these are guys who are as picky with their watches as we are with our knives.

However, the seiko diver is one of those watches that almost every watch aficionado has and likes.

Snow, if you're really hooked on a 8926 look Invicta Forum

This is where I found lover's of the Invicta and, when the time comes, do a search for coupon. I bought my 8926 for $79 shipped from shopnbc.com after using the coupon posted :)
Great group of folk there and all the Invicta knowledge you'll need.

Having had the 8926, I recommend ebay or used for a Seiko diver.
~$100 and MUCH better quality. Seiko 5' usually much cheaper is a nice watch also.

Good Morning All-

Snow, glad to see your decision is coming along well. If I were in your shoes, I would invest a few more dollars and absolutely opt for an automatic Seiko model. They are as reliable as the sunrise, robust, and strong. It is a watch you can expect to last your entire lifetime and be passed to a young relative.

There is a gentleman named Bill Yao who customizes brand new Seikos to even further enhance their functionality. Many people on BladeForums can attest to the ease of working with this person. His web site can be seen at http://www.mkiiwatches.com . Go to the watches for sale section and then scroll across the top to the Seiko area. If you would like to get some additional watch ideas, one of my other favorite sites is http://www.timezone.com .

Keep us posted on how you do and when you decide to take the plunge!

So the general consensus is that Invicta is good, while Seiko is better? I ask because I am really attracted to the Invicta, but I don't want to be cheating myself out of a better watch by choosing it over Seiko. The deal is, I find the Invicta to be a lot better looking than the Seikos. Even if the Seiko is much better quality and tougher, I don't know if it matters much, as I probably won't abuse this watch. It will be worn mostly day to day and definitely for dress-up events. So I guess my question is, "Is the quality of the Seiko divers so much higher than the Invicta that I should pick Seiko, or will I be happy with Invicta for less-than-abusive use?"

Thanks again,

Snow

If you get a Seiko instead of the Invicta...You'll always be wondering.
So get the 8926. It's a MOST attractive watch and dead on for time. The power reserve (time till it runs down) is also very good.
Folk will think you have a Rolex on. :)
I liked the black better than the blue or rose for dressy occasions.
It is a killer lookin watch!
Go FOR IT!!
Let us know :)

Good Evening All-

The two watches are at two slightly different pricepoints. Snow, to answer your question, the higher initial investment in the Seiko is absolutely worth it.

Every serious collector worth his salt has had a few automatic Seikos in his or her watch stable. They are a solid value for the money and can easily be sold. The same can't be said for Invicta, which are of "OK" quality. If it is a question of appearance, have someone like MKII individualize your new watch. You would be amazed at what a different set of hands and/or an aluminum chapter ring will do.

With all respects to TOB9595, the appearance of wearing a Rolex is not completely desired. Believe it or not, people who are horologically in-the-know would consider you quite savvy for opting for the Seiko models. Rolex is generally is attractive to newbies or for folks who aren't really "into" watches, but have a decent amount of money burning a hole in their pockets. A shameless copy of a Rolex is a few steps down that ladder...

It is ultimately your choice, but the Seiko would immediately kick-start your collection with a proven, well-respected performer. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I used to think that myself, but I've changed my tune. When I first started getting heavily into watch collecting, I was a "Rolex basher." It pleases me that I can now own Rolex without shame, and without guilt. They are in my watchsafe right next to my Panerai and Jaeger LeCoultre watches.

I don't consider myself as someone who is not really "into" watches, nor do I consider myself as having money burning a hole in my pocket. Nor do I consider that of my good friend James Dowling.

Ultimately, there is beauty and craft to all watches-- including Rolex, in spite of its name.

Hi All-

BobHWD, let me know if you ever tire of your Jaeger LeCoultre and wish to get rid of it on the cheap! One of my favorite manufactures. ;)

Let me clarify in case my post wasn't clear...which is why I used the word "generally" in there. Rolex makes plenty of solid watches and they sell darn near every single one of them manufactured each year. Supply and demand and all that...If I appeared to be a Rolex-basher, that was absolutely not my intention...but I would take your big 44mm Panerai over a Submariner if held to a single choice.

Getting back to Snow's original query...the decision was in finding a clutter-free, dark-faced, mechanical watch with luminous markers in the ~$100 ballpark. With those parameters, the Seiko is the prize-winning champ all week. A few dollars beyond that and Snow could opt for something Swiss like a Fortis Flieger.

Regards,
