Looking for a nice small single blade (maybe Northwood Indian River Jack)

Derrick provides the most non-bs answers about his own products that I've ever seen from someone, I love that! Much respect for stating it how it is and not trying to sugar coat it. It does seem to be a great knife for the money with that CPM blade steel.

Does anyone have a pic of the IRJ and a #15 side by side? Thinking hard on this IRJ now.

This is the Indian River Jack from my pocket with a 15.

The 15 is a great knife. :)

Interesting. I expected the open IRJ to be longer than the 15 since that is true of their closed lengths.

I still prefer the grip of a 3-3/4" closed length. Might have to take a look into the IRJ.

I am looking at getting a new knife soon and I think I'd like it to be a single-blade traditional. I'm looking real hard at the North wood Indian River Jack River:

It looks great, but I see mixed results on the reviews. Some say Sebenza-level F&F and others say "it's OK".

Should I go for this one or are there similar knives out there that are just as nice but cheaper than $130.

This will be my 5th traditional or so, and most of them are large Trappers. I also don't have a Peanut yet, but that pattern just doesn't call out to me like the Indian Jack.

C'mon Gary. We're not discussing Sebenzas per se. They were mentioned because they provide a useful benchmark for understanding fit and finish.

I should have noticed that the original poster was looking for comments on ff, using Sebenza as a benchmark. Sometimes I read through the threads faster then I should. My bad.

Had I noticed, I would have immediately moved the thread to General Knife Discussion. The reason I would have moved it is; when I leave a hole in the dam, my experience is, it usually ends up being a flood.

I'll leave it here now, unless it veers to far in the discussion of Sebenzas or other non-traditional knives.

I handled an IRJ briefly today, and was really impressed. Derrick is right, in that it definitely has soul. I even had a chat on the phone with Derrick today about this knife, and can't wait until it's back in my hands. Like the shot in the OP, mine is the amber stag, and it's absolutely gorgeous :)

Another alternative option is the canal street half moon. 154cm steel and around 3 3/4" closed from memory. I really like mine in the caramel jigged bone.

Hey Macchina! Probably don't remember me but I traded you for a GEC trapper. I have a Indian river jack in ebony very serviceable knife. Fit and finish is real nice on mine. The one curious thing about mine is I love so many other knives to look at and fondle, except I always end up missing the IRJ. It's hands down my most used and carried knife.
Respectfully, Chance.
P.S. I'll send you mine for a test drive if you like.

OP here: I have been using modern folders for a while now (mostly Sebenzas lately) and I am starting to transition into traditional knives now. I am still getting used to the attitude of the Traditional Forum (I like the attitude here).
I'm sorry for mentioning the Sebenza here. It was compared to the IRJ on EverydayCommentary and I use it as a benchmark for other knives' F&F. This thread is in no way about the Sebenza and even then I think a comparison to a standard GEC would have been a better Gauge.

Thanks for keeping the thread here, I only want traditional recommendations!

I do remember that trade... Guess what watch I am wearing as we speak ;)

Thank you so much for that offer! I could never do that because I would be so worried about losing it. How do you like the Ebony on yours?

I really need to stop visiting this place. I have been extremely happy with my GEC 73 but now, thanks to this place, I am lusting for an Indian River Jack! I don't suppose anyone has a photo of an Indian River Jack and GEC 73 next to each other?

This place is hazardous to my bank account!

The ebony on mine has aged well, honestly it's not a knife I pull out and think " wow check this out" it just ends up in my pocket a lot because it does. Not to big not to small it just works, I can even pinch it open with gloves. I've abused it in a way, put a lot of pressure on it cutting zip ties and this damn vinyl flooring my wife picked. It's developed a little blade play but that's no big deal to me. I'm not bragging but I've always had strong hands, I broke a pair of Snap On pliers just squeezing them handle broke and smashed my finger. My point is Macchina, it's solid seriously let me know about the test drive.
