I appreciate all of your help, but since I believe I've made my decision, i may go ahead and turn notifications off for this thread. you all have been very pleasant and I love all the help I've been given! thank you all for your time :)

I work at a supermarket as a stocker and a cashier and sometimes Ill need to cut a box or cord and being around children and families I cant just pull out a 3.5in Tacti-cool assisted opening serrated belt knife like I'll take on the trail.

is there any recommendations for a simple, non threatening, easy to operate (flipper or thumb stud), small, but also useful knife? I was looking at the Buck Revel because its a non threatening shape and color, but they seem to be not made or sold anymore, and I was wondering if there were any more modern and available options.

Just trying to find something to make my job easier and to make sure I'm not making kids and mothers freak out :)

EDIT: might as well add that price isn't really a concern since it will see a lot of use, but I'm not looking break the bank since I'm a college supermarket worker and I need all the money I can save. cheers!

Honestly, I know it's boring, but really a box cutter fits your purpose perfectly. Doesn't spook people, looks like a tool, and uhhhh ya know.... cuts boxes.

Edit to add- maybe a one hand opening SAK model would suit your purpose. It also has other tools tha could be justified, ie a flat screw driver for prying staples from wooden crates. Same could be said for leatherman Skeletool.

yeah, that's what i carry now, but it can be a little wonky, and honestly im just trying to find some other options :)

and yeah, more tools is always nice, i'm a sucker for multi-tools

As an Asian, I'm partial to Chinese knives.

Have a look at SanRenMu and Enlan. For SanRenMu, my personal favorite is the 7030. 7.2cm blade length, looks very utilitarian and super classy as well.

The non-locking models also look great.

For Enlan, the EM-01, M023, M024 and L02 are great pocket knives that IMO looks as friendly as they can get.

All these can be had for less than $15 apiece, by the way. And all use 8cr13MoV steel.

Anything that requires you to unfold a blade longer than 1 inch is going to appear threatening. Otherwise, Delica, all day long.

I like my Buck 482 for that type of situation. Haven’t had any problem using it around all kinds of people.

ETA: the Delica suggestion above is also excellent. Definitely a solid choice.

i appreciate all the quick and useful suggestions! ill try and check them all out but i wasnt expecting such a quick response :D

Cold Steel Tuff Lite, or a mini if you can find one. The Sodbuster Jr. is also a good choice, or any medium stockman type.

Never held a Manix, but I can't say enough good about the Spyderco Dragonfly.

Non intimidating
Pocket clip for easy draw
Spydie hole for one hand opening
Great little slicer

Benchmade mini griptilian in 154cm or Spyderco Delica in vg10. Both are great EDC/work knife options that come in at a reasonable price and different colored (i.e., non-threatening) handle scales.

Good luck in your choice!

I don't know if you can find one but the Spyderco Pingo is extremely unoffensive. You can turn it into a one hand opening knife. The pingo has a little vesigial spydie hole. Actually Benchmade 940 thumb studs fit exactly perfectly in this hole. Just tell BM to send you some thumbstuds.

what is your opinions on the Spiderco Manix 2?

The Manix 2 is quite big and threatening looking to regular people.

If you like the Manix shape and the Delica's size and lightweight then you should check out the Spyderco Native.

Love my Manix 2, but I'm not exactly sure it's what you want if your looking for low-key.

Let's face it, what you want, and what you need, are two completely different animals. What we may consider classy, dressy, and non-threatening, is still going to be seen by a toddler-toting soccer mom as a "Rambo" knife. It's just the way it is. An SAK, MT, or traditional are your only options if you want a proper knife.

What you need is a box cutter. You can spend $10 or $60, it's up to you. Buy a box of spare blades and never worry about sharpening. If you're worried about what the general public (or your boss) thinks, it's really the only option.
