Looking for a shovel, suggestions?

personally, i would buy a good solid shovel and cut down the handle, or just buy a short shovel. these will shovel the most efficiently, and since you said its only going to be for shoveling, you don't have to worry about not having extra utility of edge.

You read my mind siguy... today stores are closed but I am going to check a few hardware stores and consider doing what you said: Finding one with the shape I like and probably cut down the handle. I will try to find one with D shaped handle... easier to grab with gloves on or mittens. I plan to mate it with a folding prunning saw so I don't need to chop with it which makes the edge usless.

Thanks a lot,
Mikel

For some reason I thought you wanted it packable as well.
I don't know if all carry them, but our local Ace has full size D-handle shovels as well as a smaller version. Might be smaller enough that you wouldn't have to do any cutting on it at all.

I've got one of those CS shovels, and I think its fantastic. Very versatile. Could be the biggie in a Nessmuk Trio too!

I have bought the Cold Steel...it a little heavy to carry so it's camp shovel. Also bought a short shovel with a D handle at a local hardware store for a bought $15...lighter than the CS and use it for some landscaping work. Both could be used as a weapon with the CS taking top billing. As a side note...if you plan on digging only and weight is a factor...my old Boy Scout shovel wins hands down, little over a foot long, great for coals with Dutch Oven Camping and a great digging tool. Might be hard to find since there are Boy Scout collectors out there.
