looking for a small cheap folding edc knife

I second (or third) the CRKT M16-13. I picked one up just because I liked the action and spear point blade. I had to move the clip to a different location, but that took about three seconds. I bought the aluminum handle version.

Also, the SOG Flash II can be had close to your price range.

You could just get you one of the Dozier designed Ka-Bar folding hunters and be done with it. About 20 bucks and one of the best deals going in cutlery right now.

Dear Artfully,

SMKW must have sold out because I don't see it anymore either, BUT I JUST CHECKED www.bladematrix.tv and they still have some Navigators (old style serrated) for $27.

I would look for an older japanese Vapor with the AUS8 steel. The Camillus EDC is a cool knife but if your hands are on the large end of medium or bigger, you will probably find the handle to be too small.

How about the Gerber Para-Frame? the mid size (three inch blade) can be had for $24.99+tax nice knife,I carry it

ok, i narrowed it down to the benchmade or the camillus

i decided i dont much like the kershaw. the crkt shasta is crap. and the m16 would be a good choice except that if i get an m16 i want to spring for the titanium version and thats above my current price point so ill probably just get an m16 later with a larger blade

so down to the last two contenders

benchmade has the better name i guess...

but camillus has the AUS8 steel

i prefer the look of the camillus. and i dont know anything about the benchmade N690 steel

so between the camillus edc and the benchmade monochrome who wants to give me a recommendation?

some bastard had to recommend the sog twitch, which also has a nice look, assisted opening, and AUS8. argh

The Benchmade. N690 alloys out somewhere between 440C and VG-10, well ahead of AUS8. If you find an old EDC in 154cm it would be in the running, but while AUS8 is by no means horrible, N690 is significantly better - my BM Gamer in N690 is a honey.

The Monochrome is a comfy knife. I almost picked up one when they came out and my dealer let me fondle it - it's a lot of knife for the money.

That is my understanding exactly. Very good steel.

I have both the Monochrome and the EDC and like them both. The EDC is more compact and only weighs about 1/2 as much as the Monochrome. They have simililar blade lengths, but the Monochrome seems bigger and is a bit less sheeple-friendly.

The Camillus EDC goes for C$30 here in Canada with 154 CM. Excellent price for that steel. I am sure you can find it at a similar price in the US.

I think that by now they have made the EDC with 4 different blade types. The basic model has been made with 420HC and AUS-8 while premium models have been available with 154CM and D2 alloy blades. I have owned both the D2 and the 154CM. Neither took the kind of razor edge that I like in my EDC, but the D2 was better than the 154CM. I bought a diamond-coated sharpening steel just to reprofile the recurved edge of the 154CM blade. No matter what I did it wouldn't give me the box cutter performance I like in my EDC. One of the things I particularly like my EDC to do is to slice through polypropylene packing tape with just a slight stroke of the tip. I could never get that performance out of the 154CM and barely got it out of the D2. For this knife I would recommend an AUS-8 blade since it takes a sharper edge easier than any of the other alloys.

That brings up one way that the Monachrome is superiour to the EDC, it is simpler to sharpen. The recurved blade of the EDC requires you to use a narrow sharpener surface to hone the inside of the curve. This might be more of a bother for you depending on what type of sharpener you use. A Sharpmaker or similar V-rod sharpener is a natural. If you use a flat bench hone you might need to do some honing along the edge of the hone (between the flat top surface and the flat side surface). This works, but is an unfamiliar process for most people.

My new EDC is a Kershaw G10 Hawk (1436) Excellent folder, $30 on ebay NIB. Everything about it is good. It's more or less replacing my Delica.

To confuse the matter further, Buck recently released a new group of Mayo-designed steel framelocks in answer to the monochrome, EDC, etc. They have 440C blades:

Also, this weekend I got to handle one of the Spyderco Byrd knives. It seemed very well made for the price.

I kind of like the simple yet refined looks of the EKA line of knives. My suggestion would therefore be: EKA Swede 88

The 88 is one of my favorite carry knives.

ok. now do i get plain edge or serrated :D
Depends..I prefer 50/50 serrated myself,if you don't mind two go for one serrated and one plain.just plain is weird....I did that before and found myself in need of "teeth" then went to 50/50 and found I wanted "plain" *sigh* I just carry both now :D
