Hey all,

A friend of mine just recently started carrying one of those little spyderco clipi-tool knives(only because he found it) and is now starting to realize how invaluable a tool it can be to have with you. He's now looking to upgrade as the 8cr13mov is in constant need of sharpening(which i have to do for him haha) and of course they don't lock, so I'm looking for any suggestion of small 2-3" blade locking blade folders with some decent quality steel, the size and edge retention are the main things, so if anyone has any ideas let fly! Best I've come up with is a mini-grip but those can be up in the $130 range in Canada.

Decent steel in a 2-3" locking blade for less than a Mini Grip only narrows it down to several thousand choices, lol.

I'll just throw a few out for starters...

Kershaw Skyline or Leek
Spyderco Delica or Dragonfly
Cold Steel Mini Recon
Ontario RAT Model 2
Kizer 3416
Northfield 83 (for a more traditional look)

If he really likes the clip tool, check out the Spyderco Chicago, of the slightly larger Cat... 440c isn't a huge upgrade, but still will hold an edge longer (more carbon, more carbides)...
Also the Dragonfly or slightly larger Delica in vg10

Or for an even higher grade premium upgrade would be a Spyderco native with s35v Steel, (or a kizer mini)
Or a cold Steel American Lawman or Mini Recon in cts-xhp; all under $100 u.s. though not sure what the Canadian markup would be?

The Mini Recon in Aus 8 is well within the budget, and I believe with CTS-XHP it will maybe push you just outside (after lovely Canadian taxes).

The Mini Grip can definitely be had within the specified budget tax included.

What about the ZDP Delica and Dragonfly 2? Also, AG Russell has their "3in lockback folder". Its VG10, and doesn't have a clip... but they're great small 2.5in bladed folders.

I carry a boker exskelimoor II, but thats "only" 440C.

Spyderco Delica or Cricket. I love these knives, they're awesome! If you're concerned about the steel I'd go for one of the HAP40 Delicas while they're still around!

I have a feeling any steel is going to need constant sharpening in his hands. 8Cr13mov isn't exactly low end steel, basically identical to AUS-8. Could this be a user problem? Maybe a better idea would be a nice, small diamond stone and a quick demo on how to use it.
