Looking for a Spear Point Folder...

Hey everyone!

So I just got a Gerber Applegate Fairbairn in the mail (I know, why did I buy Gerber...) and the liner lock is already at 75% and I didn't even open it that hard! I love the dual steel liners, the handle ergos, and above all, the black coated spear point partially serrated blade measuring just over 3.5 inches.

The specs of this knife are exactly what I'm looking for, but the quality just isn't there! Anyone have any suggestions for something similar?

Strong handle
Blade under 4 inches
Black coated spear/dagger point blade
Single edge
Partial serrations would be a plus, but not a deal breaker
Preferably manual opening
200 budget

I have a Benchmade 530sbk and the older version of the Benchmade Stimulus. I'm looking for something more substantial than the 530 and a bit bigger than the Stimulus.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried researching any of the knives you ask for recommendations of? Blade HQ and knifecenter have great search functions. There are a ton of knives that fit your criteria exactly. Might be best for you to go look at them. Only knife I have that was described as spear point is a CS Recon 1. I believe the American Lawman is one as well.

It's at 4" (not sure if the length is a personal preference or a legality issue), but the Cold Steel Counterpoint is a good knife, and the new BD1 models are under $80 (an old AUS8 model still pops up here and there for even less). It has a satin finish and only comes in a plain edge, but you could have someone on these forums Cherokate it (I'm sure I misspelled that lol) and add serrations and still be well under budget.

I think the BM barrage would be a good match for you. It's assisted but I'm fairly sure you can deassist it.

I do research...I'm just not good at it. I thought this forum was meant to discuss knives and ask advice of the expert collectors?

I'll have to look into that!

What craytab said is correct, bladehq and knifecenter have awesome search functions. Actually some of the most detailed search options around as far I know.

Sure this is a discussion forum, he was just letting you know you could find exactly what you want easily.

You just described the Emerson CQC-10BTS, one of my favorite folding knives. I've used the dog outta' this one.

So did you give them a try? You can narrow down the selection based on nearly every one of your perimeters. After you get some that you feel interested, then it is time to ask the "experts" about qualities not necessarily as easily quantifiable. At this point hundreds of folders fall into your specs. Narrow it down if you really want expert advice and actual first hand experience with specific models you are interested in. Would you like me to post a link of such a search? Only takes a minute or two.

The Kershaw CQC4K has a 3" blade and comes in black or satin, the XL is 4" and only comes in satin but...either knife will be around $30. 8cr14mov isn't a super steel but it sharpens up easy and takes a wicked fine edge, and you'll get a framelock with the Emerson wave and plenty of cash for modifications left over.

Cold Steel Recon 1 spear point, with enough money left in the budget for another knife! I have one of the old AUS8 models, partially serrated, and I would carry it into a war zone if I had to.

Kershaw/Emerson cqc4k is really good budget blade. At first it is stiff to operate with one hand but after playing it for few days it really starts to shine. If you have xl size glove, you might want to look for larger blade.

I find the Kershaw Skyline to be the most lightweight, razor.sharp and durable folding knife I have ever owned. It can make feather sticks, notches, open packages, skin game, cut cord, drill fireboard, prepare food, etc. Except for battoning, I haven't encountered a task it couldn't handle. It also holds toothy edges very long and polished ones pretty good too. Sharpening is not gummy or chippy. 14c28? (standard version ) has also never rusted, even on the boat or overnight in Savannah Georgia. There are heavy duty options out there, I just don't have heavy duties. I just cut stuff.
Good luck on your quest.
